"Nice building but a terrible experience"

1.0

The onsen was good and the building's exterior and interior was nice.

Unfortunately, this was the worst stay of my 8 weeks in Japan. When we arrived, the host seemed unfriendly. The standard rooms are smoking rooms, but this was not clearly stated before booking. In addition, the diesel generator used to heat the onsen sent exhaust fumes into our upstairs room. The smell in the room was very strong and unpleasant. My mother has asthma, so this was also a health concern. We paid around 18,000 yen, so we expected a clean and comfortable room without a bad smell. We asked to change rooms. At first, the elderly male receptionist told us the hotel was fully booked. However, after we continued discussing the issue, he suddenly found another available room and moved us there. During this process, the receptionist was rude, unhelpful, and verbally aggressive, especially toward my mother. He raised his voice many times, stomped around loudly, slammed objects, and behaved as if he was angry at us for asking for help. My mother felt concerned for our safety sleeping in this hotel due to the aggressive behaviour of the male receptionist. The new room was also much smaller than the room we originally paid for. Because of the poor treatment and the serious problem with the original room, we requested a partial refund or price reduction. After this, he accused us of “blackmail” when we mentioned that we would leave an honest review about our experience. It is a shame because the building itself is nice. However, the customer service was extremely poor. After reading other reviews, I wonder if we were treated differently because we were foreigners. I have included photos of the initial room, two of the smaller room, and the survey form I left for feedback. I strongly recommend that travellers choose a different hotel. There are many cheaper and friendlier places to stay nearby.

A very friendly traditional ryokan, a 30 minute walk away from Kawazu station. As a solo traveling tourist with almost no knowledge of Japanese, I was a little intimidated upon arrival, but the staff was very kind and patient. The breakfast was delicious and filling, with a lovely view of the sea and the mountain. The hotel has two private onsen, with a light system to let you know which are vacant and which are locked. Each onsen has an indoor and an outdoor bath. It felt luxurious to have it to myself! The bedroom was elegant and relaxing. I also enjoyed that they lent me a yukata to use as loungewear.

This small ryokan has great views of the ocean, tasty breakfast, and relaxing private onsens! The proprietor and chef were great in giving recommendations for food and things to do in the area. The food was delicious and the chef was attentive and kindly offered to take photos of us.

There is some wear and tear in general in the establishment which comes with its age. Nothing that detracted from our stay. As others have commented, the ryokan is up on a hill and not in the town of Kawazu (one station over). Accesibilty is a little more difficult for those relying on public transportation.

"En överaskande pärla"

9.0

Superfint inredda rum i traditionell stil med vackra trädetaljer. Fantastiskt fin utsikt.

A lovely hotel, perfect for our short weekend trip to relax. There is a beautiful view from breakfast to start your day, and two private onsens to relax in. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and have advice and suggestions for places to visit

"J’ai trouvé cet établissement excellent"

10.0
