La Casa del colibri ecuador

The grounds are extensive and lovely — we had lush space to wander around in and check out all the trees, flowers, namesake hummingbirds, and other cool stuff on the property — an adorable chapel, some cool views down onto the city below, and some very nice facilities for events (although we were not there for that). Our suite was large, very comfortable, and very quiet! The staff were wonderful, and prepared us a lovely vegetarian dinner at very short notice; and the breakfast was delicious! We hung out with the owner and had some great conversations — he is Ecuadorean but has lived in the U.S. quite a bit. Casa del Colibri is a fabulous place to stay for an authentic Ecuadorean experience; it’s a great “base camp” for day trips into Quito proper (to the south) as well as points north such as Mitad del Mundo, the cloud forest, Mindo, etc.

Not really a negative, but beware that it is a little complicated to get to, so it’s probably a good idea to get good directions (or have your guide do so) before heading there. Also, because it’s in a hilly area and a bit off the beaten path, there isn’t much within close walking distance.

Delicious Breakfast was made on time especially for us - waiting at a lovely table. Staff is so friendly and helpful. Beautiful grounds! Comfortable bed. Nice bathroom.

The concept of the place was well thought out and I bet it used to be a really good hotel. The staffs are responsive and greeted us upon arrival. There’s wifi and laundry service as well.

The place is not maintained at all. The room we booked has a broken flush so we have to open the tank and flush from there. The in-room jacuzzi was the reason we booked this place but the water is not hot enough. We ended up not using it at all since by the time it fills a quarter of the tub, the water is already cold. The bed was squeaky so we kept on waking up.

The size of the rooms is fantastic, larger than any suite we've ever stayed in. The gardens are majestic and full of birds (a huge plus for us). The in room jacuzzi was amazing and dinner was exceptional, as were the margaritas! We had to leave too early to try the breakfast but everything was spectacular, especially the service of Washington and Sebastian. 10 stars!

The location was safe and secure. Very quiet and peaceful. Staff very helpful and attentive.

There was inadequate heating for the room. Very cold especially now as it is the season for it. The spa tub was very small. Made for children not full grown adults. The bed and bedding were old and of poor quality.

The service was amazing and very accommodating. They were super friendly and made a delicious breakfast for us. The grounds were very beautiful and we felt like we were in a fairy tale!
