Gorgeous hotel with lovely attentive staff. Food was great.

Light fitting was cheap and no earl grey which were minor disappointments given the price but otherwise a lovely stay.

The staff were plentiful, friendly and helpful. The food was good.

This is absolutely not a dog-friendly establishment. Rather it is dog-tolerant, and even then barely so. Dogs are not permitted into any part of the hotel, not even the reception lounge on checking in (as we did not have a bedroom at this stage the dog had to be left in the car after a 6 hour drive). Dogs have to be kept in the bedroom and never unaccompanied. There was a solitary, tiny dog waste bin which I found hidden behind a paving slab around the back of one of the out-buildings. Although the perception is that this is set inside a rolling ancestral estate beside a loch, the reality is that there is no access to the shore, the drive is fenced in and aside from one walk through adjacent forestry land in order to take a long walk it is necessary to drive the car. Other, comparable hotels go out of their way to make dogs welcome with welcome packs, treats, water bowls, access to at least one sitting room and the reception area and well-signed, plentiful waste disposal bins (with bag dispensers). The elephant in the room is the price. This is very poor value for what is one of the most expensive hotels in Europe. Given that we were denied access to the comfortable sitting rooms (see above), our entire stay was confined to the bedroom, which was tiny. The mattress topper did not fit the bed and the duvet was too small for the mattress. There were stains on the carpet, there was no armchair or sofa in the room but then again nowhere to put them. On our first night there was no coffee in the room, only decaff. At this price, everything needs to be just right. The principle view from the dining room is of a rusting, ugly green metal fire escape which dominates the picture window. The wine list, whilst good quality, was massively overpriced. At half the price it would still have been taking the proverbial.

Good breakfast and dinner. The decor and style of the whole place is amazing

There didn’t seem to be a manager running the show. The staff were nice but not sure if they had support from a manager or the level of training you would expect from this type of establishment. We had just come from Three Chimneys where the service was impeccable. For example, there was no iron or fridge provided in the room, called for an iron and the one that turned up had dirt on it which stained my dress. Then called for another one but it never turned up.
