The location only

We think the receptionist was a scammer. We informed them via Booking.com message that we would arrive early, but we received no response. When we arrived, the receptionist told us that we could only check in if we upgraded our room. After a long discussion, we reluctantly agreed to the upgrade. However, after I paid and waited for the key card, the receptionist told me we could only go to the room if we made another payment, this time for early check-in. With no choice, and because we were already tired, we paid, even though we felt we were being scammed.
