Traditional, wooden-panelling throughout, hotel near the centre of the (not very big) town. About 10 mins walk from the station and 15 mins walk from the lake. Walenstadt itself has a spectacular setting, surrounded by impressive mountains rising vertically all around, and a beautiful large and deep (so cold) lake. There's a good Italian restaurant (where we ate), a traditional Swiss restaurant and a beer hall (not open when we were in town) very near the hotel (< 50m). Our room (normal double) was spacious with good views; our daughters' room (a budget double) more compact, with sloping ceilings, on the top floor. So ask for a room NOT on the top floor. Everything was spotlessly clean and the showers in both rooms had good pressure. The continental breakfast was provided to match our group size (i.e. not an ad libitum buffet) but certainly very adequate, with fruit (delicious cherries and raspberries), yoghourts, croissants, bread, cheese, ham, and coffee/tea/hot-chocolate made to order.

No significant issues. The hotel owner seemed to have no recollection that we'd changed the booking from 3 in two double rooms to 4 in the same rooms (although she had previously confirmed by email this was OK), but she sorted out the extra linen quickly and without fuss. Although, at face value, a sleepy little town, there was a surprisingly large number of vehicles going past late into the night (perhaps heading for the restaurants/bars by the lake or the - unexpected in such a place - biker's club "Inglorious MC East Side" down the road), and the sound-proofing wasn't great.
