Las Cataratas Lodge

The lodge is really wonderful and cozy (there was a fire in the woodstove on a chilly night). My dinner of trout was great. The staff is very friendly and informative. The grounds are great for birding.

Habitations en bois confortables et agréables avec terrasses si on veut profiter. Restaurant très correct. Possibilité d'un tour pour voir (ou pas) les quetzals. J''en ai vu deux, très loin.

Le transport de la route à l'hôtel un peu cher. Taux du dollar pratiqué très défavorable.

Die Kolibris im schönen Garten sind toll. Die Forelle zum Abendessen haben wir selber geangelt. Das Essen war total lecker und günstig. Das Frühstück (Ei nach Wahl, Toast, Gallo Pinto, Käse, Marmelade, frische Obstwahl, frisch gepresster Saft, Kaffee oder heiße Schokolade… 🤩😋) war reichhaltig für den Start in den Tag und auch sehr lecker. Die variablen Decken im Zimmer haben gegen die Kälte in der Nacht geholfen. Wir empfehlen diesen Ort!

We had a good stay at the Cataratas Lodge. The room was clean and spacious. It's very quiet and peaceful. The surrounding area is nice and we saw lots of birds. Breakfast was also good and the staff were friendly.

L'accueil extrêmement chaleureux de David, l'environnement charmant et paisible du domaine (petits chalets équipés de terrasse installés dans un jardin vallonné très fleuri, au centre un petit étang où l'on peut même pêcher la truite !). La présence de colibris et autres petits oiseaux très facilement observables, les sentiers de ballade en forêt menant à deux cascades... Il y a également un petit restaurant rustique et vintage qui propose une cuisine simple et excellente ; le petit déjeuner en option l'est tout autant ! Nous avions aussi réservé un tour d'observation des Quetzals avec David qui s'est plié en quatre pour nous permettre de voir et photographier l'oiseau rare ! Activité à faire absolument !

Petit déjeuner au top ! Le personnel est très sympathique et disponible pour nous renseigner. Les petits trails sont très sympas à faire avec une jolie cascade à la fin. C'est un endroit parfait pour se reposer, admirer la nature et les oiseaux et proche de toutes les activités de San Gerardo de Dota.

Il faisait froid dans la cabane et il n'y pas pas d'eau chaude pour la douche

David and his family are extraordinary hosts. We (me, wife, and 7yo son) stayed for 4 nights. We were there primarily to observe birds and wildlife. The property is beautiful and has its own small network of trails, as well as hummingbird feeders frequented by several species. There is a small trout pond, where my son was able to catch two trout for our dinner (prepared by David's family in the kitchen). Meals are simple and delicious (breakfasts, with the homemade jams and yummy juices, are a highlight!). David served as our guide on a Resplendent Quetzal tour, and he was excellent in this role. He was in constant communication w/ the other guides via walkie-talkie and was able to lead us to a quetzal surprisingly quickly! He was also very quick at finding the bird in his spotting scope for good views -- not a small feat given the density of the cloud forest vegetation! David also helped us arrange a horseback riding activity for my wife and son; a visit to Batsú Gardens for some bird watching and photography; and spa services for my wife at Del Río Spa. Our Spanish is limited, but David's proficient English and willingness to help us with bookings made things easy for us. The location is great -- a short walk to upper-valley attractions like Miriam's Restaurant and Pizzeria Los Colibris, and an easy drive downvalley to Savegre, Batsú, and other classic birding spots at lower elevations. Finally, I must add that David and the kitchen staff were wonderfully kind and accommodating with respect to our son's food allergies. They listened to our concerns, communicated clearly, and alleviated our son's anxiety about some of the foods. His allergies can be challenging to navigate, especially in a foreign language, but we felt confident that we were in good hands at Las Cataratas Lodge.

The cabinas are small and simple, but sufficient. For the price, they are an excellent value.
