Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge

The property exceeded our expectations. It is sooo ideal for a family — the space in the rooms, the grounds outside and the nature around is amazing. The staff was so friendly, pleasant and helpful. We look forward to visiting again.

Our ONLY complaint is the kitchen appliances and supplies. For a room our size, the plates etc need to be stocked to match. Also the water never heated up especially for the winter weather. Despite these small issues which should be easy to address, we would return to Madi a Thavha again.

Madi a Thavha ligt een aantal km buiten Louis Trichardt en is een verborgen juweeltje met prachtig aangelegde tuinen. Het personeel is in één woord fantastisch. Misschien niet in de zin van goed opgeleid of getraind maar ongelooflijk lief, zorgzaam en behulpzaam. Het eten is fantastisch en Jay, de jonge kok, heeft goed de kunst van zijn oma afgekeken. Op ons verzoek maakte men zelfs met veel plezier een traditionele Venda-maaltijd, inclusief kippenpoten en pens.

Hoewel de buitenkant er op het eerste gezicht uitstekend uitziet, is er duidelijk nog veel werk te verrichten. Onderhoud aan de gebouwen, zowel binnen als buiten. Watervoorziening en elektriciteit kunnen wel een goede opknapbeurt gebruiken.

Breakfast. The room was clean

We experienced electrocution hazards from the water taps and shower, as both appeared to be electrically live. Wifi connectivity is poor. Trying to locate the place at night was also a challenge as the arrows are nor vissible

The place is very pleasant, had a great past that is shown everywhere, but the management is poor and the place is not welcoming and alive. Small things like opening the doors of the veranda on a sunny day, open the windows in the breakfast room on a gorgeous morning, cleaning the glasses, switching on lights inside at dawn, setting the breakfast table with serviette, sugar, milk, open the bedroom to get some fresh air before the guests arrived and get rid of the musty smell and maintenance seems not a priority. Lots of potential though.

It is a beautiful venue set in the tranquil mountains. It is not too far outside of Louis Trichardt but enough to be peaceful and have a pretty good view of the night sky The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The pool was clean and inviting. There are wide open spaces of lush grass which my dog really enjoyed. There is a massive tree and it is clear a lot of work and attention to detail has been added to many parts of the resort. There is a hike available to a waterfall. One can park right near the site. It is a great place for photography, retreat, health and healing. There is a restaurant and a fridge full of cold drinks and alcoholic beverages available. The gardens are beautiful with some beautiful flowers. The internet worked well enough at 2mb/s in the room and closer to 10mb/s in the restaurant. The mosquito net around the bed was a good touch and the bed was clean and comfortable. There is a microwave and bar fridge/freezer.

Things which bugged me: the road in was a bit wild with wet muddy parts and a point where I had to cross a bit of a water rapid. I recommend a 4x4 but smaller cars can make it through if you have experience with that kind of drive. In the room was a DSTV decoder but no TV. There was a coffee/tea area but no kettle. There is a kitchen sink to wash but no hot water tap for it. You need to bring your own cleaning stuff if you need to use it instead of the restaurant. There are probably better rooms but my room had an open shower next to the bed and so smelled a bit damp. The toilet door didn't close properly and has no windows or extraction fan and the light was too dim. It is suitable for one person on a budget or with a pet. There were no bugs in the room but there area has a lot of spiders including big ones at the room entrance so if you're arachnophobic you may have a hard time.
