Villa KUMANO

What a spot!! Really well appointed villa with great hosts! Not only did the provide us with welcome drinks including sake and beer, we also got a spectacular view of the Torii Gate. The whole place was really cosy and breakfast in the morning was brilliant.

That we only stayed for one night!!

The location is incredible in front of this huge tori. Waking up seeing this is incredible. The house is super confy and we’ll equipped. The little cafe near offers yummy breakfast and you are just walking distance from the sights.

No towel cause they can’t clean them so bring yours !

The private, unobstructed view of the Torii gate itself is worth booking this place for. But on top of that, it’s a spacious, beautiful traditional Japanese house. Easily the most beautiful stay of the trip. There’s a great ramen place and konbini (convenience) store just a few mins walk down the road. The house is by a busy road, however the traffic mostly stops at night, you will sleep to the sounds of frogs (:

Only that the towels were very small and non-absorbent.

Absolutely gorgeous house, spotless clean, yet a “lived in” family house all possible amenities, appliances and utensils. The pictures are correct - you have your own view of the largest torii in Japan, presiding over rice fields. In the centre of Hongu, close to a few local eateries and 300mm from the visitor centre, bus stop and on the crossroads of the Kumano trails. We were concerned that there would ne noise from the adjacent road but the town is so quaint that that wasn’t not the case at all. We have spent two weeks travelling Japan with family and this was hands down the best place and we all regretted we didn’t stay longer. Thoroughly recommended.

Villa Kumano is in a perfect location to visit Hongu and the surrounding area. You have an incredible view to the world's largest tori gate, and can walk to the shrine and World Heritage information center, as well as restaurants, stores etc. It is a great space for people traveling together as there is ample room to hang out, cook and also retreat to your private space with three bedrooms. The bath and laundry are spacious and work well for groups. Also had super helpful instructions on how to use the appliances and laundry printed out for you, as well as lots of information on the area and the Kumano Kodo if you happen to be there for hiking. It's also very well located to visit several onsen towns within 15 minutes drive. The hosts are very easy to communicate with and helpful when you have questions. They even called and booked a massage for us since our Japanese was limited to the basic traveler phrases! All in all it was probably our favorite place that we stayed in Japan. We are already planning to try and return so we can stay again and do more exploring!
