"Eye Catching Views!"

10.0

Along with a wonderful stay, the amazing views of the mountains and lake is eye catching. Having a cup of coffee while watching the sunset from the balcony made my stay memorable over here. The best oart is its excellent location along with comfortable and tidy rooms!

"Fantastic views and ideal for big groups"

8.0

Just finishing up a family holiday here where all of our family got together - total of 8 adults, and 2 kids. House has plenty of room with 5 bedrooms, two living areas, two decks, garage, and three bathrooms. Is on the hill overlooking the lake, absolutely stunning vistas of the mountains and watercraft going by. About a ten to fifteen minute downhill walk to town, coming home real steep so grab a cab which is cheap anyway. TVs in all the rooms, living areas have flatscreen, digital tv etc and those in the bedrooms a older and smaller but do the job. We've really enjoyed our time here, even with a crowd we've had plenty of room and the kitchen is large enough for everyone to get involved. The house is probably ten years old plus and decor reflects it, when built was all top notch though so despite being well used its still acceptable to us as it represents great value for the size of the place. Queenstown is a great spot and if you have a group the Matterhorn puts you in a great position to enjoy it

"Stunning views"

8.0

We booked the Matterhorn for a self catering 5 day stay in Queenstown for 5 people. It has an absolutely fantastic view of the lake and surrounding mountains as it is quite high above the lake and has uninterrupted views (see my attached pano photo). The house is quite spacious with 2 living areas and a reasonable size deck with outdoor eating and BBQ. 4 of the 5 bedrooms have views and there are 3 bathrooms in the house (a necessity for us 5, but it may be a struggle if you had 5 couples). The kitchen is well located, sizable allowing 2 to 3 working there together and well located for the main family/dining area; it worked well for us. On the other hand, it is claimed to be 5 stars, but don’t expect the usual 5 star quality. The furnishings are somewhat mixed and not up to 5 star quality’ they are clean, tidy comfortable but just looking a bit tired and disjointed. Whilst the bed linen and towels were sort of OK (3 star quality), there was only limited soap and certainly very minimal toilet paper in the bathrooms; this was more like 2 star. We enjoyed the modest walk into Queenstown’s village centre quite a few times savoring the stunning scenery; mainly downhill all the way. Some people may find the considerable uphill walk back too much, but we certainly found it good to feel like we were walking off much of the great local food and wine we consumed. We did use a cab to get back when we purchased our food supplies and that was only a few dollars. The hill should not deter many who visit Queenstown since it is a centre for numerous physically activities. The house has some benefits for skiers, a well equipped laundry with excellent commercial quality washing machine and drier, and I understand that there is drying room. We would consider staying here again for the spacious accommodation and the stunning position, but not the claimed 5 star quality.

"Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet As Man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

10.0

This place is brilliant, upon arrival from our long journey from fox glacier we were welcomed in by Joe and Maria to sit down and relax with a cup of fresh coffee and maria's home made cakes......mmmmmmmmmm i can still tast them now!!!. Both were very extremly friendly and helpfull and shared their wealth of information on queenstown and the surrounding areas with us to advise on things to do during our stay in queenstown. All of this whilst having the most spectacular veiw over looking the lake, remarcables and town. They then showed us to our room which was very spacious and luxurious and also with balcony with amazing veiws. the breakfast was terrific and maria and joe made the effort to sit down with us everyday and join us for breakfast, talking abotu tsnamis, olympics and any thing that was going on at the time, the conversation with Joe is never boring. The house is massive and they have many different rooms depending on what you require, all of which are so well decked out. the place is also very cosy and clean. Origionly we were only going to stay for 2 nights but in the end stayed for 4 It hink as the place was so good. Walking to town is easy only 5-10 mins, walking back is a bit harder which we did a couple of times, but if your on your holiday you may aswell fork out 8 bucks for a taxi, which there are plently of in town. When we next come back to queenstown we would def stay there again. Joe and Maria thank you so much for making us feel welcome and making our stay in queenstown a great one. By the way if your reading this joe and maria, we made it to the christchurch the same day although the drive through lindas pass was a bit hairy with all the snow. The worst part was driving down the hill from your place it was a bit slippy, next time we might have to get some chains!!! Stay at this place its amazing and you won't be dissapointed!!!

"One of the highlights of our honeymoon - magnificent"

10.0

We stayed at the Matterhorn Chalet for 3 nights during our honeymoon in March 2006. Staying here was one of the highlights of our honeymoon. Yes, it was a little out of town and up a steep hill but we had a hire car so it didn't bother us and we got a taxi home at night which wasn't expensive. The views from each room are amazing and the whole place is beautifully decorated. Joe and Maria's wonderful hospitality, delicious cooking and magnificient home have made us decide to stay there again this year in September. We're hoping Joe and Maria will adopt us.....

"Amazing view"

8.0

We stayed at the Matterhorn Chalet for 3 days in Feb 2007. The view of Lake Wakitipu and the Remarkables from the balcony of our room is the finest I have ever experienced in a hotel anywhere. The “price” that you have to pay for such an amazing view is that the Matterhorn is situated at the top of a very steep hill which at our age is a very daunting prospect to walk up. However there are plenty of taxis in the centre of Queenstown which will take you there after a night on the town for a modest $8. The room itself was at the pinnacle of the building which indeed is designed like a Swiss chalet. It was very large but did not have its own private facilities (all the other rooms in the chalet do). When Joe and Maria get these installed there they will be able to offer the perfect penthouse – the bed is the biggest I have ever slept in - wider than it is long. We did not notice any particularly arduous ‘house rules’ as mentioned by a previous contributor although it was the only b&b at which we stayed in NZ where we had to order breakfast the night before. The food and the hospitality of Joe and Maria were first class and we also left with a load of tips and information about life in NZ which enhanced the remainder of our visit there.
