MacDonald Cabins

Great location next to the West Highland Way. Friendly, helpful staff in the bar. Good food and views of the loch from bar.

We did not stay in the actual hotel but stayed in one of the cabins behind it. This place is in need of some serious maintenance. Several bathrooms were out of order, had leaking pipes, no lights, doors that wouldn’t close or lock. Light bulbs missing in cabin. Cramped bunkbeds in the cabin. With few other choices available on the WHW McDonald Hotel will continue to fill these cabins. Sad to see they are not willing to look after the place for the hikers that are the mainstay of the business.

The cabin was really disappointing & unclean - public hairs in & around the bed; dead bugs on the sheets; mould & damp on the floor & walls; no soundproofing (you can hear everyone around you); a horrendous smell at all times; poor facilities that haven’t been updated in decades; freezing cold overnight (very basic, single glazed patio doors didn’t help with this) & a heater that contributed nothing; very basic double bed with a single mattress that didn’t fit or provide even the most basic support. The reception was unfriendly on check in and nobody was around for check out (which we did a day early - read below). Not a single happy face from anyone there, guests or staff, and you can see why. It was so awful that within a couple of hours of check in we’d rearranged our schedule, just to avoid staying a second night (it was about 9pm at this point so no alternatives available, much to our disappointment - I suspect this is the story for a lot of travellers; book in and then find they’re stuck). Instead we drove the 3+ hours out of our original plan for the second night, which cost us time & money, but I’d gladly do it again to avoid this place. Water can’t boil hot enough & bleach can’t burn strong enough to get rid of the disgusting feeling it left on us. Avoid it like the plague!!
