The 2 members of staff that actually worked at the hostel. They have saved the hostel from getting a zero rating

Even before arrival The hostel had problems with our credit card (it's been used OK throughout South America this past 8 months!). So we uploaded details of a 2nd emergency card to secure our booking, with a request not to use it as we would incur extra charges on that card (and we would deal with the payment on arrival). However, they deducted the money straight away and left us out of pocket. It took management several days after our arrival to send a receipt so we can claim back the VAT (as we are foreign travellers with a PDI card). Day 1/night 1 We arrived early (due to bus timetables, about midday, 3 hours before official check-in) with the hope we could at least leave our bags there until the room was ready. The information on the door indicated reception was open between 07.00 and 23.00 hours so we rang the bell. No answer. There was information that if there was no response from the desk to contact via WhatsApp. We sent a WhatsApp message. No reply. We left and returned at 15.00 hours. We rang the bell. No response. About 5 minutes later a lady arrived to open up, but had no knowledge of our booking. Eventually she found the details and took us to a front facing room (no. 1) next to the noisy main road. We had specified booked a back room, with a pool and garden view, with a fridge. The room had none of these, so we complained and she went to phone management. Simultaneously to this, and 10 minutes after check-in, we received a WhatsApp to say we would be let in at 15.00 hours, that we would have room 3, could we wait another 10 minutes. OK we thought, just a simple mistake, annoying but it happens. Over an hour later we were still waiting to be shown to our room (still being cleaned). When we finally got shown there, it was the back of no. 1, so, still on the main road, no fridge, no garden view or pool view. (The pool was only ยพ full, dirty and full of mosquito larvae. Totally unusable.
