Hostel on the Hill

Martijn führt ein sehr außergewöhnliches Hostel. Wir haben uns bei ihm sehr wohl gefühlt.

Hostel on the Hill heeft een ontzettend relaxte, huiselijke sfeer en ligt in een rustig, authentiek Portugees dorpje op een steenworp afstand van het surfstrand Praia do Zavial. Ik heb er tijdens het lopen van de Fisherman’s trail twee keer overnacht. Na de etappe vanuit Carrapateira (die normaal in Vila do Bispo eindigt) besloot ik net dat stuk extra (1 uur) door te lopen om hier te kunnen verblijven—en dat was het waard! Ook na mijn wandeling vanuit Sagres koos ik bewust weer voor dit hostel, om de volgende dag mijn tocht te vervolgen richting Luz. Eigenaar Martijn snapt wat een reiziger nodig heeft en creëert een heerlijke, ontspannen sfeer. Een aanrader in de regio Vila do Bispo/Raposeira!

I stayed two nights during my hike on the Fishermens Trail. My idea was to do two etappes from here since is not directly located on the trail, but when I arrived I decided to actually skip a part of the trail and explore the beautiful hilly area around Hostel on the Hill. I love the atmosphere of the hostel. It feels like a place of home to me, rather than many other places that I visited which was not so cozy as this. Hostel on the Hill has a soul. People actually interact with each other, and respected the resting hours during the night when I was there. I slept in the bottom bunk bed in the dorm room and it was comfy, felt that I had my own little space there. The bunk beds are solid that they don’t shake or make noise when you move at night. The kitchen is fully equiped to cook and if you don’t feel like walking to the nearest supermarket, there are some small things offered by the host but I do recommend to bring some food when you arrive. The views from the house are breathtaking. Also the garden I really found relaxing. It has lots of hidden spots to surround yourself with the sound of chirping birds. The host Martijn is such an easy going warm hearted and open person with humor and has a lot of cool things to share about the beautiful things in the area. Definitely ask him about the beautiful beaches in the surrounding! Wish I could stay longer and I definitely will come back.

No complaints! I didn’t expect too much because of the good price for a dorm room, and it turned out that I liked it even more than I’ve could imagine.

Wonderful views and the immediate feeling of being in a cosy home. Remoteness but still has a good local restaurant and small towns and villages nearby whilst also not far from amazing beaches.

Mattress comfy, quilt warm enough, just needs more substantial pillows.
