Barn1920s Hostel

The neighbourhood is so nice, the streets around are quiet without traffic, there is a small night market in front of the hostel, a medium night market a few streets further away. It is a food market and it is better than the huge night market we find next to the Mekong. The hostel is very peaceful, the hot chocolate they serve is amazing! The staff is so nice!

The bathrooms were nice and clean and had plenty of hot water. The rooms didn't smell like mould. There's big lockers, hooks and curtains for each bed.

We arrived without a booking as we wanted to see the room first (many places in Laos have rooms with a mouldy smell). Unfortunately, the staff seemed quite inconvenienced by our arrival and were not very welcoming. Important details such as the included breakfast and how the free drinks worked were not explained to us — we only found out the next day that breakfast was included and self-service. When we first arrived, the beds were not made, so we had to wait before checking in. We also weren’t allowed to leave our bags in the room until the beds were ready. The mattresses are covered with a leather/plastic material, which makes them less breathable and not very comfortable in the heat. I did notice that the team filmed themselves deep-cleaning some of the beds. It’s great that they take cleanliness seriously and go to that effort — but it seemed they only deep-cleaned a few of the beds, not all, which felt a bit inconsistent. One morning, we were woken up at 7 a.m. by cleaners having a loud conversation in the room and turning off the air conditioning. When I went downstairs to ask for it to be turned back on, the morning staff (a friendly male staff member) was very helpful. However, the next morning I woke up at 5 a.m. to find the air conditioning off again, making the room extremely hot — especially uncomfortable with the non-breathable mattress. Overall, while there were some positives (particularly the cleanliness efforts and one friendly staff member), the experience felt disorganized and not very guest-oriented. It's also MUCH cheaper to book bus tickets directly through the bus companies and not through the hostel. You can save alot of money booking direct.
