33 Backpacker

This hostel is apparently an institution in Hengchun. I understand why. I really enjoyed my stay there. It is not fancy but it has everything you need. I liked the details, such as the shelves, hooks and a fan in each cubicle, or the padded door of the dorm to muffle the sound when it closes. 10 beds in the dorm, but people are very respectful and keep quiet (like everywhere in Taiwan) so no issues to sleep. The dorm has aircon as well as the usual amenities. This hostel is nicely decorated and looked after by the owner, currently repainting parts of it. 3 cats live there, including my beloved Meow Meow. Literally 150m from the bus station, right within the old city, with a multitude of restaurants and bubble tea shops nearby. Excellent value for money.

The owner speaks very limited English, although he does his best to help. The person at the information centre at the bus station does not speak any English either.

Location

infested with cockroaches (huge ones, small ones, every size), unsanitary, smells of cat pee, no air conditioning in the common areas so the smell is even worse. No sheets for the blanket, and sand on the actual mattress like the sheet wasn’t changed

The hostel have soul which is very rare so I really appreciate it.

I saw a cat peeing in the shower room.

It is just few steps from heng chun bus stop, its value for money as the price is cheap

The room is quite dark and toilet is average
