Hippo Lodge Backpackers

Location was close enough to town even if you had to walk up a steep hill. Cheapest place to stay in town.

Dirty bathrooms. Bathmats and shower curtain in need of changing more often. Kitchen in need of deep clean. Stove didn't really work without clicker. Dorm room was smelly on arrival. Carpets needed hoovering. Place seemed a bit run down and in need of a proper clean. Clutter was a bit unappealing. Mattress on top bunk was old and had coil sticking up.

Location near to city centre & room size was okay, price was fair enough.

Facilities...Particularly the washing area only1 pair of washer & dryer but 1 dryer was working you need to claimed at the top house to use the old working dryer. Kitchen was messy and too small for the number of occupants and the shared bathroom/ toilet wasn't proportion to the number of occupants. Living area you can't use because most of the time it was occupied by the other tenants same as the kitchen too small and easily get crowded. Parking was the most frustrating of all the facilities, first come first served on a few slots which was not proportion and sufficient to the number of rooms & occupants.

We have been to Hippo lodge before and knew what to expect. The backpacker aspect of the lodge is well established and you get what you pay for. The views from the lounge are superb and the cooking facilities good. The dining and sitting rooms are comfortable and well furnished. Hippo lodge is in an excellent position for all the attractions of Queenstown.

In the 8 years since we were last here the lodge has become a little less bright and cheerful as it has aged but it is a minor quibble as it is what it is. Parking is never all that easy at Hippo Lodge and it is on a really steep hill so anyone with mobility issues would be wise to look elsewhere.
