Open Gate Hostel Hawaii

The staffs are friendly & the vibe is super chill—not a party hostel. The bed is comfortable & the room is very clean. It’s the cleanest ecohostel we’ve ever been! The stargazing deck is amazing (you can see the milky way) & the lava landscape makes it truly a unique experience only available in Big Island.

I’m aware that it’s an off-the-grid experience, but disclosing some essential information in the property description would’ve been appreciated. Transparencys is important so that people know what they are signing up for. I’m the kind that read everything before I book, so I’m a little surprised by few things. For example, No hot water in ensuite bedroom (hot water only available in shared bathroooms), but it’s disclosed nowhere in the hostel description (also not in their website). Booking.com’s room description says “air conditioner” but no aircon (we don’t need it so it’s not a big deal for us). Moreover, their website says 24h internet connection available, but electricity is only from 6am to midnight, which means no wifi after midnight. I think those working as digital nomads with cross timezones would want to know that. On our 2nd day we woke up at 6am, waited until 7am but the electricity still hadn’t turned on—we had to wake someone up to get the electricity on. We were Late for a morning hike that day because of that, so that’s a little disappointing.

No water no electricity at night finally, cannot do the bath. Somehow hot at night but too many tiny flying insects and was bitten by multiple.

The vibe you find at Open Gate Hostel is hard to explain and find somewhere else. Staying here was one of the best decisions I have made throughout my two weeks in Hawaii. Staff is truly super (helpful, friendly, welcoming, helpful) and the people you meet there are just amazing. My private room was large, comfortable, and clean. Bathrooms and kitchen were very clean, too. Location is incredible.

One of a kind comfy place with a friendly staff. Very cool experience, we enjoyed it very much. It has all you need, including a star-gazing patio and a gym. Staying here made our trip special. Highly recommended.
