1166 Backpackers is the dream waypoint for travelers. Immediately upon arrival you are greeted by one of the guesthouse's wonderful staff members who introduces you to the area, ensures your comfort, and provides helpful guides and maps to locate the best food, cultural experiences, and travel portals in the nearby vicinity. When I was leaving, they also helped me book the most efficient and affordable travel to my next destination, informing me of a train cancellation that I had not known about that would have seen me stranded!! During my stay, I made fantastic new friends with the other guests, with whom I ended up planning an entire day of visiting the snow monkeys, exploring museums/gardens, getting walnut ice cream, eating yakiniku, and singing karaoke with. I cannot stress enough the easy opportunity that 1166 Backpackers provides to make new friends, practice Japanese, and discover things not in the guidebooks - all while providing a safe haven to catch up on essential travelers' chores such as laundry and logistics. I look forward to returning in a future trip to the area and exploring what Nagano offers in a different season!

Welcoming check in by lovely staff. Wish I stayed more than one night! Great location by Zenko-ji temple. Very comfortable bed. Was only one shower but wasn't a problem at all.

Walls are thin so can hear people in other rooms.

This was one of my favorite stays in my one month in Japan. I absolutely loved this hostel. The staff make this place really special. They are all incredibly helpful, warm and welcoming and willing to assist with everything. I also met lots of awesome people here to go sightseeing with which was great as a solo traveler. It's very conveniently located in the centre of the tourist area of Nagano by Zenkoji temple. The filter coffee in the mornings is delicious. As a bit of a coffee snob, I was excited to wake up to it each morning. There is also barley tea and snacks available all day.

Nothing to dislike here. I'd just add that the dorm rooms are a bit small so the room can be noisy depending on the other sleepers but I didn't have any issues. The hostel being in the perfect location in Nagano's tourist hotspot means that it is about a 20 minute walk from Nagano station however there are buses very regularly, almost every 5 minutes, and they all go to and from the station.
