CHI can highly recommend this place! James is a very kind, helpful and welcoming host, who also has interesting family lineage in Mulu in case you value supporting local communities. His wife, Brenda, is a friendly and engaging guide that has in depth knowledge about the geology, biology, history and society of Mulu. She can also organize transfers from Limbang (the end of the headhunter trail) to Brunei, which is hard to organize yourself. Because shes also a licensed park guide, she can offer smaller group tours (we were 4-6 people) into the park instead of the mandatory larger groups you have to sign up at the park HQ directly. Even though Mulu Village it is a bit of a walk (or a very short ride - which James is always able to organize on short notice) to park HQ it is pretty much next door to the only super market in Mulu. Also, Stellas cafe next door gives beautiful views over the river, and she is happy to adjust her tasty cooking to a vegetarian option for you. In case youre missing Western food, across the bridge there is the Marriott which has all kinds of Western food and a nice bar as well. If youre fine with a simple amenities and want a beautiful, relaxing experience in Mulu, this is the place to go.
Amenities are simple, but the pictures speak for themselves and I think you know what you sign up for.
PLDobra komunikacja z gospodarzami Jamesem i Brenda, szybkie odpowiedzi, chętni by pomóc.
GBSuch a lovely little home stay close to Mulu NP. James is one of the nicest and friendliest people you'll ever meet. Brenda was also nice but a little less friendly. Both a nice couple providing a cute home stay though. Nice little cafe across the road to get your breakfast and dinner. It's only 5 min ride from the home stay to airport or NP. James will pick you up for 5 RM each way (worth it in the heat!). No mozzie bites in the room at all (and they love me so this is a massive win for me!) but be careful in the park. Tip! If you bring a refillable bottle you can get free drinking water in the park. Note on the NP itself: it is extremely tourist and privatised feel. You can't wander around as you please like other NPs (e.g. Bako NP) and there's not a lot of unguided trails to do. All caves are guided only.
No wifi there but you can sometimes leech from the Mariott hotel that's across the river (not that big of an issue for me). The park don't give you their wifi password so either make sure you have a sim to whatsapp James to go back, make a friend who does, ask one of the locals to call, or be prepared to walk there and back (would not recommend in sun). No a/c in room but there are fans. I think most of the home stays in the town did not have a/c. I heard from a fellow traveller that the cabins in the NP do have a/c. It's fine for 2 or 3 nights personally but I got a bit tired of everything being a little damp and never being fully dry! It's basic but you're here for the park.
