"Good, basic accommodation in Abu Simbel"

7.0

I only stayed one night. It's exactly as described and the pictures are accurate. The host was very helpful and polite and responsive, the internet worked well and its an easy 15-minute walk to the temple. The room was clean, there was a kettle and some tea bags in the kitchen and a few pots and pans.

This guesthouse is quite overpriced for what it is compared with other places in Egypt and prices in Egypt generally. Given the price, towels should really be provided. However, all of Abu Simbel is overpriced and this is actually the most reasonably priced option I found. And as mentioned, everything was exactly as described and clean, so I would definitely recommend this guesthouse.

"Good location, clean and tidy, but no towels are provided."

9.0

The location is excellent and the Abu Simbel Temples are a brisk and easy 20 minute walk away. The room was spotless and the bathroom were clean and tidy.

Towels are not provided, but I always carry a microfibre towel, so this was not a big issue.

"Super helpful host"

10.0

Really clean and the host was super helpful going above and beyond which is why I gave it a high rating

There was no soap in the bathroom I think the host just forgot it was a minor inconvenience and I'm sure the host would have fixed it if I mentioned it.

"Great location and price. Needed cleaning."

6.0

I am the brave person who booked a property with only one review, so I am going to go into detail to help you all. This is a private house with 3 bedrooms and a shared bathroom/kitchen. We had the whole place to ourselves, as probably no-one else was brave enough to book it. It is impossible to find the house, even with my passable Arabic and the address written in Arabic. So the owner, Shaban, met us near where the bus dropped us off. He comes across as an honest guy, not at all dodgy. When we got to the property, it was as if a messy single guy had just moved out. The pictures you see on the website are the correct property. Just imagine them with overflowing rubbish bins, bottles/cans everywhere, dirty floor, dirty kitchen, and a foul-smelling fridge with mould growing in the food remnants. Funnily enough, the bathroom was spotless. After I spent 30 minutes cleaning, the place looked great (except for the kitchen+fridge, which I dared not tackle). There is no equipment in the kitchen to cook or eat with, so we did not even enter the kitchen again, except to use the washing machine (a big plus point). The WiFi does not work. Now for the good news: The beds are large and comfortable, and there is a/c in the bedrooms and living room. The bathroom is modern by Egyptian standards, with a powerful shower. The location is excellent - right in the centre of Abu Simbel town in a local neighbourhood. The area felt very safe - kids playing on the street, and local residents genuinely happy to see 2 tourists actually staying in the town, and not just whizzing by in their air-conditioned buses. Excellent grilled chicken/fish at Faraina restaurant on the corner (meals for 125 LE). 25 minute walk to the Abu Simbel temples, or 30 LE by tuk-tuk. The owner of the property, Shaban, owns another hotel called Tuya hotel, which is mid-way between this property and the temples.

So to summarise: Look, this place only cost us $18 USD per night for the room. We needed somewhere to sleep as we went to the Sound and Light show at the temples (very good), and didn't fancy the 8-hour round trip on the bus from Aswan all in the same day. So if you are looking for a cheap place in a great location, a friendly owner who promptly answers messages, need to get your laundry done, want to contribute to the local economy, and don't need to cook for yourself, then don't be put off by my negativity above. I have even cleaned the place for you! Just don't open the fridge! Hee hee.
