Nice small apartment in beach town not far from beaches ( walkable)

Decorated and furnished to the standard of a good mid-range motel or hotel, much slicker than more domestic rooms on Booking.com. The bathroom was superb, with a great shower, illuminated mirror and hard-wired hair dryer. The bed was comfortable, and the roll-down shutters and quiet location made it possible to get a sound night's sleep. The location is pretty good for Metaponto Lido, near one end of the long promenade, a few restaurants, and a small shop/minimarket, though these were closed when I was there in winter season. You wouldn't have far to walk to be on a lovely sandy beach or one of the lidos with sunloungers and umbrellas.

No wi-fi. But that is clear in the t&c, so you know what to expect. The only real issue I had was with early communication. When I met my host Clarissa, it was immediately obvious she is a kind and hospitable host. She was also extremely organized and quick to respond to any messages. But a few days before my arrival, I was sent a message, without her name on it, that sounded almost threatening in tone. It warned of a 15 euro per hour charge for any arrival outside of the specified check-in time, "especially without communicating it". When you book, you are automatically committed to a 50% payment of the full amount. But Metaponto station is not easy to reach out of season, and I was so disturbed by this message I briefly considered cancelling anyway and staying in Taranto. Instead, I made a special effort to reach the Lido early, and was very specific about my arrival time. It all worked out, and as I say, Clarissa in person was much friendlier and more hospitable than her message made her seem. But suppose, say, you have no option but to arrive late, or you suffer some sort of accident or delay beyond your control, perhaps even making it difficult or impossible to communicate, those extra charges could prove stressful and serious. I would therefore gently suggest to Clarissa that she reconsider how she communicates early on with her guests. It is perfectly reasonable to make them aware that she has to put herself out and travel from a distance to meet them during check-in. But it may be better to ask their consideration and co-operation in ensuring a smooth check-in than to operate a punitive policy. Also, of course, I do not know what difficulties she has had in the past with inconsiderate guests - it may be this is the policy she has finally had to resort to when a string of late arrivals from uncommunicative holidaymakers has driven her to her wits' end.
