"Shocking experience"

We've been met by a lady with the keys. I asked her whether I could write to her if I need smth, and she confirmed. Later that day I found that of the 2 knives one is broken (and the other is a bread knife), so I wrote to her, but she ignored the request. The next day I wrote to the host, but he chose to ignore me as well; instead his wife called. I asked her to replace a broken knife. In return she asked me (in a demanding tone) whether I am aware of the fact that they live in another country? And no, they don't have anybody to manage the apartment, just handing over the keys and cleaning, so if I need a knife I should go and buy one myself. Further she stated that I am just deliberatly trying to find fault with the apartment, and if there is something else(?) I don't like, I might as well leave immediately. I assured her that nothing is wrong, I just need a knife to cook. To that she repeated in a very aggressive manner that I am just picking at the apartment, and that I should leave. I was totally shocked by the rudeness and general inadequacy of this communication. No host ever talked to me like this. I was assaulted, accused of smth imaginary, nearly thrown out - and all that just because I politely asked to replace a broken knife? Besides, letting an apartment is a serious business, it's not just cleaning and handling the keys, it's also managing, solving current problems etc. And if one is not ready to take this business seriously like a responsible adult, then maybe one shouldn't do it at all?
