JOIVY Bright Flat with Workspace in New Town

Good location, decent amount of space

Check-in was incredibly confusing, and the key system was horrible. For some reason, the apartment had more locks than a dungeon, and if you needed help, they would send a locksmith and charge you £114 for the service. If you’re going to act like a hotel, then you need to have staff in the city you claim to represent. On top of all this, the property did not look like the photos, and was quite outdated. The fire alarm went off if you showered for more than 2 minutes. The wood floors need replacing, and gave us splinters on multiple occasions. The espresso machine wasn’t cleaned and full of old, moldy coffee grinds. We really wanted to like this place, but felt scammed by the end of it.

The only advantage to this property is its proximity to the Old Town - you can easily walk to the Royal Mile and other main attractions of Edinburgh.

This was my most disappointing stay booked through booking.com. This is managed by a company, so you would expect the appliances to be working before you check in. The washing machine and the oven were both broken, the kitchen window was almost a safety hazard (they fixed it after I contacted them). We stayed for 3 nights, and had to call for maintenance twice. Also, you need to give them a deposit (approx 250 pounds) or a non-refundable payment (approx 33 pounds) before you can enter the property. This had surprised me initially but after entering the flat, it made sense. The apartment is poorly maintained, smells of smoke, the shower door is broken, floors are extremely creaky and it exceeds any excuse that you could perhaps make for an old world charm. The rugs in the living space look unwashed since ages! Other reviews have already warned about the building staircase (I would take it seriously, though I understand it is beyond the company's control). I lodged a complaint with them and they have promised a 20% refund on the account of broken appliances, but paying 600 pounds for 3 nights, this was just a massive letdown. I will be avoiding this company.

Spacious but only has a small bathroom. Good location.

Should indicate that if there are issues with mobility this property is not ideal. 2 floors of poorly kept stairs and rickety railing. With luggage it was not a good fit. Kitchen did not have any paper towels and no facial tissues. For the price we were expecting a more well kept property. Use of the laundry facility would have been helpful too.

Spacious 2 bedroom apartment, good kitchen and lounge area

No air conditioning, no lift 3 sets of stairs difficult even for able bodied people with luggage, No welcome book with apartment and area instructions. Not everyone has ability to use smart phone access for information, washing machine not available, broken shower door. Need washer/dryer at least in apartment.

Great location to all the shopping and restaurants

The smell of smoke is strong throughout the flat. We tried to use the oven and it cooked too hot it did not operate correctly. The shower door is a definite safety hazard. It easily slides off track and u need to catch it before it falls. Bed is extremely hard and pillows are flat. Floors are so loud and squeaky throughout the flat.

First and foremost the apartment had a stench of old cigarette smoke and this was noticeable during our entire stay. My partner who was pregnant almost vomitted as we arrived. It was so bad we considered changing our accomodation but could not find a suitably priced alternative. All the carpets need to be cleaned or replaced. The flooring is creaky and there was a draft coming into the main room from the floor boards. It's possible the smell could be emanating from these gaps. The apartment is unkept and has aged and is in desperate need of a renovation. A good paint job, new flooring and a few new carpets would go along way to enhancing the look and feel. Whilst the location is good, you will have some noise coming from the streets below. Be prepared for a steep climb up two flights on your arrival ( almost 50 stairs). Thankfully we had two men to carry the luggage up and down. On check out they require you to take out your rubbish and wash your dishes which is unheard of in my travels.
