This house is above a shop and accessed from the street via its own entrance. Elderly guests or those with lots of bags should be aware that there is quite a long staircase to the first floor. But it’s well worth the effort as you are greeted by a myriad of carefully-preserved original features. All the floors are either stripped wood or the original ceramic tiles. There’s an eclectic mix of antique and semi-antique furniture with wonderful period paintings, photos and documents covering most of the walls, even chandeliers! The upstairs bathroom is enormous with a giant old bath as the centrepiece with an unusual free-standing hand basin. But the main attraction is the spectacular kitchen and dining area. The cosy, large, square space is complete with all mod cons including induction hotplates and a dishwasher. There is a little outside patio with a small table and chairs and plants on the wall just off the kitchen. And to round things off, at the top of another staircase is a roof terrace with views out over the rooftops. During our stay in July the whole property was beautifully quiet with absolutely no noise from surrounding buildings or the square. However, it probably won’t suit everyone. If you are used to sparkling, modern environments, it might take you a while to adjust and some might not like the old-fashioned ambience. However it is all very clean and the beds are comfortable. It’s not possible to take a car into the pedestrianised square but you can park temporarily quite close to load and unload. You can then park in parking slots which are marked for public use in the surrounding streets but the easiest option is a big free public parking area just outside the city wall by the aqueduct. The proprietor, Paulo, is very friendly and happy to help with all this and any other problem.

This place was amazing! So many interesting details. The location was fantastic and I wish we could have spent more time there. The owner was kind enough to spend some time with us explaining the different tile work and traditional features in the kitchen. A wonderful place!

If you want old world character this it it. One of the most interesting places we'd stayed. The flat is massive and the kitchen has a combination of modern and old world character. Pictures do not do it justice - the flat is totally amazing

No air conditioning, but the high ceiling and supplied fans were able to keep us comfortable despite the 37C temp outside.

It was spacious and had good character. The beds were comfortable. Very Vintage vibe. The linens were clean and plentiful. There was soap and towels in the kitchen and bathrooms. We only had a very short one-night stay and it was good for what we needed. The host was responsive.

Finding the rental was a bit of a wild goose chase. Maybe indicating it has a bright green door in the instructions would be helpful. Once we found it, it was fine. The location is central, but far from parking, so that should be considered if that is a concern (dragging luggage can be a challenge). There was major construction happening in the building attached and it started bright and early in the morning. If sleeping in is a priority, this may be hard. The stairs are steep and long (which was fine for us) but should be considered if you have mobility issues. All in all a decent stay and great value, especially if you are a large group as this place is HUGE!!
