Candlemaker Old Town 500m from Edinburgh Castle

Very interesting place to stay in. The apartment in the heart of the Old Town, beautiful old building next to the famouse old graveyard seen from the kitchen window and the Scottish Museum opposite the street.

Just a little refurbishment of the rooms will be useful.

We loved the character of the place. Everything was there that you would need for your stay.

We found that the party revellers that visited the kebab shop across the road from us were disruptive to our sleep.

The place has an excellent location and a family feel. Most of Edinburgh's wonderful sights can be reached on foot. The administrator, craig, was wonderful, helpful and a good friend. I highly recommend this place.

The apartment was very welcoming and we felt at home right away. The sleeping arrangements were comfortable and the place was quiet for the part of Edinburgh it was in. The apartment was warm and plenty of towels and toiletries were provided in the bathroom. The kitchen was well stocked with all the things you would want, including foil and cooking oil, and all the utensils you would need. There were plenty of dishwasher tablets and laundry capsules. We were there over Christmas and had our Christmas meal there and the facilities made it easy to do prepare this. The location is excellent- right beside the National Museum of Scotland, which is huge and free. The castle is a 10 minute walk away. It is an easy walk from the train and bus stations and the tour buses go right past. It is a 5 minute walk to excellent views of the fireworks at New Year and other special occasions. It was certainly a very special Christmas and New Year and this apartment played an important role it making it unforgettable.

Because the doors are old, the locks could be fiddly. The door to the apartment itself could be hard to open from the inside of the apartment even when it was unlocked. It took a while to learn the technique! The Internet connection wasn't great for 4 heavy users like us, but I would imagine would be sufficient for more typical users! More toilet roll would have been nice, but to be fair this was a self-catering stay and there was the option of having this apartment serviced if we'd opted for that.

The location

The most annoying booking ever for me (and we travel a lot!) They spammed my mailbox with dozens of payment requests and other emails. Demanded property damage deposit (£200), asked for an extra £84 for any cleaning (we stayed for 4 nights) All this tarnished whatever positive vibes we had from our stay. The damage deposit was finally refunded after a few unpleasant messages (minus AU$11) as I was supposed to wait for it for a week. And after all this had the audacity to ask me to recommend it to friends and family :(

there was a mouse running about the apartment. I reported it on a day 1 of a 3 night stay and was told that is to be expected in old houses. Sorry but I expect someone to come and put some traps about or do something similar. we left a day early.

The location was exactly in the middle of the old town so everything was easy to reach on foot. The apartment was well equipped, we found there absolutely everything we needed. There were also board games and books on the shelf. The flat is cozy and welcoming. The contact person was kind and gave us lots of information about the city, the area and the flat beforehand.

The lock of the doors was really tricky, hard to open and close. The water pressure in the shower is really weak. The window of the kitchen is literally facing over the cemetery (the closest grave was just about a half meter away from the window which is very creepy). But we did not meet any ghosts fortunately :D The area is a bit noisy on Friday and Saturday nights.

We spent one week at the apartment. I enjoyed the stay. The location is very central. Everything is as described and as per the pictures, so I found what I expected. Very clear explanations were sent by the host. Someone will bring the keys to explain the locking system and to show the apartment (with late check-in extra charge is requested). Coffee and tea for breakfast are provided at the apartment as well as many guide books for routes suggestions. USB plug in the bedroom is also available and it really helped to charge phone without needing additional conversion charger. Old building but it was quite clean. dishwasher and washing machine are available. However we did not use them.

Not really a complain, just to inform possible future customers: - it is not re-fundable - We had an issue with flight cancellation: all correspondence was done via messages as i believe an agency is managing the apartment and it was not possible to have a call. - a bit pricy I think, but I guess this is all Edimburgh... - Internet connection really isn`t the best - street can be noisy late evening/nights. I just simply closed the windows - a lot of light is coming within the the bedroom even if curtains are closed - late check-in has a price (as stated in the description) - I found the bed quite uncomfortable - There is one room with double bed and the living room as a sleeping couch - it is indeed old building as mentioned from other reviews, but well kept and clean (in my view) - indeed the window at kitchen is facing the cemetery. Not an issue for me.
