Whanga Butcher Shop

The location was superb. Whangamomona is such a tiny settlement everything was within a stone's throw. The pub was 3 doors away - a 'must do'. The accommodation was cozy and even had a fireplace and firewood. It was a challenge to find the matches to light the fire - turns out it was on a string in the wood bucket! But the owner did get someone to drop a lighter off to us. The bed was comfy, the fridge stocked for breakfast, TV got all the channels given it's so remote. All the comforts of home in a quaint Kiwi style decorated place. And wow, a local repair person fixing the place next door didn't start till 10am - a real bonus!

Property very retro. Keys were not as anticipated, but clever wife found a spare set. Needed fire to warm. Kindling etc all ready to go. Within 30 minutes was lovely and toasty.

We loved the cosiness, the layout of the room and the extras of basic breakfast items and toiletries. There was no shortage of firewood, and everything and one was very friendly. Loved the drive in and would definitely recommend.

So this is rural New Zealand. Not a polished up touristy version, but the real thing. Don't think that you're going to go shopping after you've been to the local gym. There's a fabulous old pub (about 4 doors down from the butchers shop), which serves beautifully cooked breakfast, coffee, dinners and of course drinks. And that's the only operating 'shop' there. The butchers shop is an old building that's been tastefully altered to suit accommodation. It's old, so no heat pump or A/C, no underfloor heating or heated towel rails etc. However, if you want to experience real, legit old time rural NZ, I highly recommend it. It's remote, so bring everything you think you'll need. Fabulous log-burner, with plenty of firewood, electric blankets on all beds (sleeps 4), gas cooker, great shower, good internet, selection of books to read. Great place to come and just forget the world.

Having to leave.

Unfortunetly we had No hot water because the gas ran out, not ideal when you need warming up and The fire didn't hold heat, so it was cold all night. But the worst bit was the place is haunted, we felt something physically touch us and were ready to pack up and leave at 12am. Definitely not the night stay we were expecting.
