Casa La Huerta

Fantastic location in the middle of the village. You can walk from your door to neighbouring villages or up into the mountains. Be warned - almost every walk (in town or out of town) involves long sections as steep as a staircase in many cases. You need to be quite fit. Bubión is lovely and full of traditional character. The apartment is beautifully furnished, spacious and well-equipped. We visited in February when it was -2 to 12 deg C outside. Remember it is 4,000 feet in altitude, so much colder than on the nearby Costa del Sol. The owners only turned on the central heating for two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening, which was actually enough as it is so cozy. They did offer longer hours.

1. It was not made clear in advance that tenants cannot realistically park next to the property. It has no dedicated parking space. I was sent a ‘please call me’ WhatsApp message on the day of arrival that I missed as I was driving. I drove to the appartment (down very narrow streets) to be met by a local resident telling me (politely) to turn round and use the public car park. There was (almost) no on-street parking visible. Fina (the host) then appeared and shooed him away. It turned out that she had been planning to arrange to meet us in the public car park (a 5 minute walk up steep streets) to then take us and our suitcases down to the appartment. We were then expected to keep our car in the car park for the week, after which Fina would transport us and our luggage back to our car on the last day. To be honest, I preferred this as the streets are very narrow but it would have been better to tell us in advance. I suppose they don’t want to put people off booking! 2. Frequent smell of bonfires in neighbouring gardens. This seems to be an accepted part of the local culture. You just have to shut your windows and move your washing inside.
