Melville Street Apartment

The ground floor flat is easily accessible, and located a few steps from the Haymarket station. An easy walk both to Old and New Town, to the Walk of Leith, to the Modern art galleries, to buses and train connections. Very convenient for our purposes. Plenty of good restaurants and shops in the area.

We managed to avoid the hefty surcharge for a late check-in (40 pounds after 10 pm, read the fine print) but we had to wait for the person in charge of opening the flat. Explanations were cursory to say the least. The bedroom is quite comfortable, the kitchen is well provided but without a table, and the sitting room is grandiose with two sofas. The bathroom is really tiny, and the basin is smaller than an A4 paper sheet. The area is very quiet at night, during the day you can hear the nursery nearby, which did not bother us, but there can be quite some screaming. Good wifi.

The prices you see is for two people, although the apartment is for four people (one bed, one sofa bed). They charge separate for each person £30 a night plus £40 linen and towel fee. We got discount to £15 a night per person. They send you a link that asks you to enter your credit card number and they charge you separate than booking.com They charged us $325 deposit for 4 nights as well. The mattress for the sofa bed is so bad, it is impossible to sleep on it and wake up without a backache. They charged us £100 for it. The lighting in the living room is not enough. One of the ceiling lamps was broken, we asked them to change it, no one came to change it during our 4 nights stay although they promised to change it. The Kitchen was not clean. The floor was sticky. Washer worked but dryer’s door did not close so we had to put the bin next to it to keep the hatch closed. The water pressure for the sink in the restroom is very low and the sink is the smallest I have ever seen. Difficult to use.

It was just a 5 minute walk to the tram stop so was able to access a lot of the area via tram. The street was nice and quiet (was during the weekend so not sure if that differs during the week). The flat was provided with throw blankets and electric heaters which helped as the living room did become colder during the late evening! Very spacious! A lot of communication from Cathy which helped the check in and check out run smoothly!

The walls are very thin, could hear the nursery next door (did not negatively affect the trip) more of a negative as we were extremely conscious of how loud we were speaking etc.

Very spacious, clean and well equipped in a quiet part of town yet close to shops, cafes and transport links.

Miniscule washbasin in the small bathroom. Toiletries provided was an almost empty antibacterial liquid handsoap- strangely out of kilter with the more upmarket ambiance of this apartment. Not good value for money during Edinburgh festival. Very unwelcoming to refuse to let luggage be stored early on the arrival day. Also unpleasant to demand a large deposit £250 against breakages.

Foldable Clothes drying rack would help.
