Truly unique chance to experience life in the Japanese countryside. Akira-san and Nono-san are the most warmhearted and considerate hosts. Me and my husband enjoyed a farm tour, walking around the village and cooking healthy and delicious dinner together with the hosts. We also had really interesting and inspiring conversations around the fireplace. Warm bath in the evening was so relaxing, futon beds are also very comfortable. It takes only 1 hour from Kyoto to Ayabe by train, so the place is really easily accessible. I definitely recommend this farmstay to everyone who wants to experince not only the big cities but also peaceful countryside in Japan.

We had a wonderful experience at a farm stay near Ayabe, ~an hour northwest of Kyoto. We were hosted by the very gracious Akira and Nono, former city dwellers who opted for a simpler life in the countryside. We helped prepare dinner, enjoyed simple, organic, healthy meals around the hearth, and had engaging conversations. Most of the food were grown on the farm (the most delicious rice cooked with bamboo charcoal, and tea made with black beans). We learned about the process of making miso and made our own mochi (with 4 different toppings). The rustic farmhouse oozed with charm. The cold night was warmed by a kotatsu that I had only previously seen in a Japanese comic book. I am so glad that we left the cities and grabbed a car to go off the beaten path. This was a priceless experience that we will remember for years to come.
