"Highly recommended, super excellent choice for the price."

9.0

Overall, I highly recommend Suandok History House. For the price point, and even for a slightly higher price point, I can't imagine why someone would prefer staying elsewhere. - Really excellent/probably one of the best choices for the price. Any other places in SE Asia where I got a single room for this price point were poorer quality - The room was quite nice - nice aesthetics, newer renovation, two full beds - I can't remember clearly how comfy the bed was (I didn't sleep well for other reasons unrelated to the guesthouse that night), but the mattresses seemed newer/not worn, were fine quality, and a comforter was provided which is appreciated. - The other guests were very quiet, which was appreciated since the doors are thin - The décor in the common area is very cool and interesting - The host was nice - Unlimited free drinking water in recycled bottles and a kitchenette for use is awesome - The location might seem unideal to some since it's a bit of a walk from the old city and would require a grab to the far side of the old city. However I think it's an excellent, underrated location. Firstly, it's just a couple blocks from the main road but is tucked away on a nice quiet side street. Secondly, I loved the neighborhood - more young and hip locals than the old city but with a spread of demographics, a lot of young cosmopolitan working Thai students/professionals, feels more like being in a local/authentic neighborhood than the old city, inexpensive but a lot of great restaurant/cafe/market options, close to the hip Nimman district. Thirdly, there is a lot to do within walking distance (Wat Suan Dok, Tom Phayom Fresh Market, Lanna Traditional House Museum, Medicinal Plant Garden, Princess Garden, Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders, and on the way to the Monk's Trail and Doi Suthep National Park).

- The doors/windows are a bit thin, so if the other guests were very noisy I think it would've bothered me. However, noise did not end up being an issue whatsoever as it's on a quiet side street and the other guests were very quiet. - When I arrived and left the host wasn't there, but this wasn't an issue for me. I just messaged him on booking.com when I arrived and he walked right over from like a block away, and when I left I just left the key in the lock for him. Maybe a note at the reception desk to message him would've been helpful because I was confused what to do at first, but not a big deal. So for me this doesn't bother me at all, but for people who want a full hotel staff around just be aware it's quieter and has someone easily reachable to address issues, but not necessarily always there.

"Highly recommend this place!"

9.0

The room was very clean, modern and everything we needed was provided. The location is perfect with a motorbike and near to the city. The host is very kind and it is possible to rent a motorbike for a good price. We also were allowed to use the kitchen, furthermore we got water bottles as much as we wanted for free. There is also a private bath in the room with shower gel & shampoo. Its such a nice place for a city trip to Chiang Mai and the price is invincible!!!

The only contra is the noise from the airplane because the airport is nearly located. The host is so kind and provide earplugs for free and in the night it’s silent (the airplanes just take off until midnight).

Convenient location near the airport (more on that in a bit). Really good local restaurants. The rooms and social area are clean with some quirky touches. There is facility to cook and a fridge. Noi, the host/owner has his own business and has made many of the signs and artwork. There is free water and coffee in the communal area. The aircon is good, with fans as well and the showers are warm. Noi very kindly took us for a walk up in the hills and to a friends' restaurant one evening, then out to a bar with really good bands. He goes above and beyond as a host to make your stay comfortable. There are just 3 rooms at the property. Plus, it is really good value for money.

You can't ignore the airport. Flights stop at night and the take off noise is short lived.

"Pretty Chilled"

It’s pretty chill and the owner was nice. He had foam earplugs to block out the sound of the planes from the airport. I suggest you use them if you are a light sleeper!
