It was close to the centre of St Andrews which was important as my mum cannot walk very far.

The accommodation was up 39 steps which was completely unexpected and we definitely would not have booked if we had realised this. My mum is nearly 80 and stairs are a real issue for her. The room had no where to sit- there wasn't even a chair - which meant my parents found it very difficult to relax. There were no staff after 5pm and my parents arrived after 6pm and had to ring someone to find how to get in. Really the accommodation was very unsatisfactory for them.

Wonderful large room, bed very comfortable, well-appointed and lovely Scandinavian feel to the decor. Huge bathroom, entry hall and a Nespresso machine with plenty of coffee and tea. The fridge was filled with complimentary biscuits , water and a small bottle of fresh milk, which was a very thoughtful touch and so much nicer than the plastic milk tubs. Breakfast is not provided in the Arran but the manager sent an email in advance with local nearby suggestions - Thank you, Charly.

What was not clear on booking a suite was the configuration - I had booked a suite as it said two rooms (one for my husband and I and the other 'room' was to be for my adult daughter. On arrival, it transpired that the second bedroom was a mezzanine with a glass safety barrier directly above the bed. This was not what I expected and would have booked something else if that had been clear. It was beautifully appointed, wonderful bed linen, etc., but not suitable. The Manager kindly found an available room for my daughter after some discussion - she was delighted with her room and a bathtub! Our room was exceptional, there were plenty of wall radiators but the room was a bit cold - we did resort to the fan heater and small electric radiator to take the chill off the room. The bathroom was lovely and warm with a very effective heated towel rail -
