"VERY DISAPOINTED"

4.0

Stayed 4 nights. Twin double room, should have been a single very narrow. Electrick plugs nearly hanging off wall had to get on the floar and hold them to plug things in.The radiator never got warm, no radiator in bathroom. very cold in there as water never got hot. Had to pull the bed out from wall to plug tv on. Behnd the bed was very dirty. 38 steps to our room and no lift, had to carry our case when we arrived and when we left.Very small space in reception leading to dining room door which was kept locked till bang on time. Guest lined up all the way down the stairs, a fire hazard. The coach parties age was about 70 so the above is not good. On the plus side the food was good but very very slow service. Staff very polite. Hotel in a lovely setting. A very tired hotel and past its sell by date.

"The Hotel is in a terrible state, the food is o.k. very slow service, 1 1/2 hours from sitting down for dinner"

4.0

All rooms in bad state, Bedrooms: very old carpets, loose wall sockets 1940/50 wall paper, the bathroom has a bath but the taps have been disconnected? its purpose is for standing in whilst having a shower, the sink is along side the bed. The Lounge and the bar room also very dated, the Dinning room follows suit , the meals are O.K. if you like a roast every night with supermarket frozen vegetables, you have the option of an alternative. Be prepared to carry your suit cases up 2 or 3 flights of stairs as there are No staff and No lift, There is an old table right outside the front door where the smokers congregate, the smoke drifts through the dinning room window which is next to the front door, this is terrible if you don't smoke, especially while you are eating. The hotels web site advertises a Putting green at the front of the hotel, There is NO putting green. The hotel is a husband and wife team, the wife seems to do everything, she cooks, serves, takes meal orders, books you in on arrival, we even saw her taking the bed linen up to rooms, we never saw the husband apart from him coming on the coach when we leaving , hoping we would be back, others saw him in the evening as he managed the bar. If you want to experience what it would be like to stay in a care home, this is for you, although a large percentage of our coach party said they would go back, We would never go back.

"Nice stay at the Saint Merryn hotel near Saint Ives"

6.0

Our rooms were clean and quiet but in need of a little bit of money spent on them. Our room had no shower which is unusual nowadays. There is no lift and the stairs are a bit dicey for elderly people. On the plus side the staff were excellent and the food was first class.I enjoyed my stay here we travelled with National Holidays and the trip was good value for money

"Good Value"

8.0

A small family run hotel and Mike and Blanche offer a warm welcome. Food is very good and freshly prepared by Blanche. Portions are large, but you can help yourself to vegetables. Breakfast is also substantial and waitresses are very quick and efficient. The hotel is in need of an update in decor and there is no lift which is a disadvantage if you find stairs difficult. The bedrooms however, are very clean and comfortable. When you weigh up the price you pay and what you get for your money, you can overlook the cosmetic and dated decor, and it is very good value. Thanks for a restful friendly and comfortable stay.

"Old fashioned charmer (a bit!)"

6.0

A ‘value’ hotel here, very old fashioned in presentation and facilities but to be fair a friendly welcome and pleasant approach from the staff. The room we were given was quaint and up several flights of stairs. All bedding and bathroom, towels etc were spotless, I did find the carpets and skirtings dusty, I noticed this as I am allergic to dust and the plug sockets were on skirting level. A small tv and tea making facilities were good, plus handy hairdryer. There could be WiFi in common areas, that would be great... The shower was hopeless and like a very tiny tap, plus some hooks would be useful in bathroom. Food was plain but cooked well and my niece and I appreciated the kindness of the proprietor in offering a different dish if the meat was not our choice. We didn’t go into the bar but there was some local entertainment- singers and bingo on two evenings. The tv lounge was very old fashioned, not for anyone under 75! The hotel has lovely gardens and grounds but they needed attention and love to bring them back to life! Some guests dropped cigarette butts and that is quite rude and littering in such a pretty place as St Ives. Great location, 30 minutes straight down hill to town.

"National Holidays St.Ives"

8.0

Had a long journey to get there due to traffic.Dinner usually at 6, but quick check-in,so ate just after arrival.Had a sea view overlooking main road.Beds comfortable, clean towels and bedding every day.Allocated a table according to room number in dining room.Menu on table for evening meal, there is an alternative choice if you don't want the set meal and vegetarian meals can be provided. There is a bus stop on main road near Tesco and one further down before The Cornish Arms into St.Ives.There is a lounge and a bar in hotel with drinks very reasonably priced. There isn't a lift, but owner helped with luggage.Teas, coffee, hot chocolate replenished every day in room.Plenty of storage space in room.Bathroom a little snug, but clean.Optional excursions,Land's End,Truro,Porthleven all details in reception. An enjoyable holiday.

"Some good bits some bad bits"

4.0

Just been to st lves Cornwall with national holidays Monday to Friday . Stop at the Merryn hotel it was a bit dated if you cannot walk very well lot of stairs no lifts Twenty minites walk to st lves but there is buses that run on main road.Food was excellent but slow serving took one hour and half to be served. Another point is smoking out side the door and smell of smoke coming back into dinning room . Should have smoking shelter away from door . Would not go back to the Merryn hotel .would stop in st lves where there is more to see .

"home from home"

8.0

as you arrive it might look a bit uncared for , the garden is not looked after but full of flowers and a visiting cat from a couple of streets away that likes all the fuss it gets . the outside of the hotel looks as if it has just been painted. was given key to room on first floor, i was a bit dissapointed we were looking over the small empty car park but it was good because there was no traffic noise at the back and the window could be left open . the bed was a bit hard , the duvet was heavey the pillows also hard and lumpy . lots of creaks from the floor above and bodily functions could be heard at night . the very best thing of the whole stay is Blanche and her cooking , all the food was fresh cooked , roasts , veg, potatoes etc , her pies and puddings were so very nice, all large portions with lots of cream . a set dinner but blanch comes round at breakfast time to ask if there is anything else you would like instead . the two girls who serve at night don't talk or smile , they don't seem to be enjoying their job , the breakfast woman was very nice smiley and chatty but she disappered after the second day we found out she was rushed into hospital. hope she is ok . we are planning to come back next year just to have more of Blanches cooking

"Some good bits, some not so good"

6.0

This hotel is definitely a case of you get what you pay for. I came on a very cheap coach trip with a friend so my expectations weren’t very high. However we had a very warm welcome from Mike and soon shown to our room - overlooking Carbis Bay - what a bonus! The bedding was immaculate but the decor very tired and dated; cracked tiles, fitted carpet in the bathroom. I’m fit but still entered the stand-up shower over the bath with trepidation. I don’t think many in the party could have been able to take a shower. None of the electrical items displayed a PAT certificate and the fire evacuation instructions looked as if they had been printed many years ago. I’m not sure if we had different food from the ‘home cooked’ mentioned in other reviews as it was all, apart from the eggs at breakfast and salad, from the freezer. However the others seemed to like what they were served so Blanche obviously knows her market. The waiting staff could do with customer service training. Although the server was efficient she had an abrupt manner and few smiles. St Ives is about a half hour walk away, either by road or the coastal path but with plenty of buses for those who don’t wish to walk. If you’re looking for an inexpensive basic base then the St Merryn hotel is OK
