Kochang and his wife are the best host. The homemade dinner and breakfast are excellent. We will go back there for sure to bring our extended family over.

I had such a wonderful stay to start my Kumano Kodo. Dinner and breakfast was amazing, freshly caught fish and an absolute banquet. Next time I definitely want to go fishing and/or farm picking. Things are quite basic but if you are keen for a rural Japan experience ( with a guitar performance ) you will have a great time.

If you are interested in finding out what it's like staying with a BFF's Japanese grandparents, this is it. It is not a fancy guest house, it is a home where you are treated like a very welcome guest. The food is good, but I didn't find it to be amazing. But the hosts were lovely and very helpful. They picked me up from the train station and put up with my not so amazing Japanese. I also did the fishing experience and that was a ton of fun. We caught dinner! INCLUDING that evening's sashimi, which was delicious and very unexpected. Note that their boat is like your great uncle's boat. It is NOT fancy, but it's very functional.

Because they have a farm, I thought that this was going to be a farm stay. This is NOT a farm stay. You stay in their suburban home and then they can take you out to their plum/orange grove, which also might be suburban, but also might be a little farther out. If you're looking for a farm stay, this is not it.
