Good family home, lots of space

The booking.com listing made it clear in three places that the property had air conditioning. This turned out not to be the case, and the hot weather meant we spent a number of uncomfortable nights at the property. The owner blamed booking.com for the misinformation in the listing, although it’s hard to see how this could be the case given aircon is mentioned in the free text description of the property which was presumably written by the owner or their agent. Had we known the house didn’t have aircon we wouldn’t have booked it for a trip during the height of New Zealand’s summer. We were also surprised to be informed close to our arrival date that the owner has a separate unit rented by a different tenant and accessed through the garage of this property. This made it less private than we were expecting. One of the rooms had a stream of ants running across the back of a desk/worksurface, and there was a shopping trolley in the front garden. All in all the house didn’t feel terribly well cared-for, despite it being up for sale at the moment, and we have an ongoing dispute with the owner about the misinformation on air conditioning.

We were not told this house was for sale. The owner said is was unlikely there would be any viewings. However on the second night, the owner sent me a message saying they needed to do a viewing for the following day. I didn’t get this message until the next morning as we had been out doing a tour and didn’t get to the house until 3am. The owner called multiple times early in the morning, showed up to the house and was knocking and calling out to wake us up. Being half asleep, I felt pressured to allow the viewing. She asked us if we could leave for 30 minutes so she could show people the house. The owner did offer us a free night but we had already booked accommodation for the next part of our trip. Just felt it was quite rude to ask that of someone on holiday and basically give us no choice.

Loved how big and spacious it was and we didn’t have to go anywhere for the kids to be happy

What a total gem! A castle with so many thoughtful features. The group loved the stay. Nice coms with the hosts, too.
