En Route Guest House

It is a nice midway stop between the Cape and Gauteng. We we were warned when we made the booking that there was a gravel road to the guest house. That was a nice upfront to know. Trompsberg is a "small" town. Welma gave us advice on local restaurants, and we had a great meal at Affi-Plaas Coffee shop and grill. Just double check closing times as after 20:00 there is nothing. The Guest house does have a communal kitchen so we could have cooked something ourselves if needed? The room was spacious. Comfortable beds.

Typical Free State summer - Very hot. The room didn't have an air-con but there was standing fan provided which gave us some comfort. There was only one bedside lamp with a low watt bulb. Didn't provide much light for the room. Ceiling lights - that's a different story. They are bright fluorescents. Something between a Hospital room and office. So maybe a brighter bedside bulb would split the difference. Other "gripe" is the lights in the passage outside the room are also very bright and the room curtains are thin. We eventually got up and found the light switch for the passage (sorry if we weren't supposed to switch them off), but we need to sleep. Maybe some blockout curtains for our room (Room 01).

The location is clearly not "En Route" as it is +/-15km of gravel road away from the highway!

Water pressure was very low and we struggled to have a decent shower, as it was difficult to balance the cold and very hot water and the shower floor is steep and slippery. There is only one lighting circuit so if you want the bathroom light on, the big fluorescent in the bedroom goes on as well.

Quiet and beautiful. Braai and kitchen facilities. Clean.

Room a bit hot but cooled down when we opened windows. It could have been opened before we arrive. Aircon was not working- maybe because of loadshedding.
