Dar el Marsa

This tall and narrow house is located in the non-touristic part of the Old Medina, in one of its small, authentic alleyways. The location is absolutely fantastic — very close to the American Steps, and just a few streets away from the lively heart of the Medina, Grand Socco and Cinéma Rif. You are surrounded by great places to eat and perfectly positioned between the old and the new town, and the beach is also within easy reach. I spent a full week here and loved it. I often walked home alone through the alleyways late at night and never had any issues. It’s a quiet, very local neighbourhood, which I personally enjoyed a lot. The house is authentic, basic and without unnecessary frills, which made it very charming in my eyes. On the ground floor, there is an entrance area with a washing machine. On the first floor, there is a landing with a large wardrobe and a first bedroom with a firm mattress, which was my favourite place to sleep. Spare blankets and linens are also available. On the second floor, you find the bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower and a second bedroom with a much softer mattress. Other travellers mentioned that this bed suited them better, so it is really a matter of preference. On the third floor, there is a small kitchen, a dining area and a sitting area with the basic equipment needed to prepare simple meals, and a small fridge. I found this space charming and spent a lot of time there. Most of my time, however, I spent on the rooftop terrace, which offers a wonderful and wide view over the new town, the beaches and the old Jewish cemetery, which is definitely worth a visit. Overall, I consider this house a great deal with a very good price/quality ratio. Rashid welcomes you at the American Steps upon arrival, guides you to the house and shows you around. Communication with the owner was limited but correct.

Many reviews mention the stairs. This is true: the house is narrow and the stairs are the central spine of everything, so if you have limited mobility or poor physical condition, this house may not be recommended. But if you are in normal shape, the stairs should not be a problem. The same number of stairs in a larger house would probably go unnoticed. Some areas could use a bit more care. I would consider replacing the mattress and the rug in the second-floor bedroom. The bathroom toiletries are limited and of lower quality, so I would recommend bringing your own shampoo. If you are looking for authenticity and you are mobile and in good condition, do not hesitate to choose this house. I would definitely consider staying here again when I return to

The location was good for where I needed to be. Yes there are a lot of stairs but you would expect that in the Medina. The street outside was a bit grim with rubbish and cat mess. It was cleaned every night though. The roof terrace was a big benefit. The two beds are in small rooms and the upstairs bed was more comfortable.

A few more rubbish bins and a bit more effort on comfort. It needs a bit of an overhaul. The electrical sockets are a bit loose.

We only like the location as its near the center

It’s not what is in the picture,the property is very dusty and there is only one electric fan it is very hot.

Location, location, location … the old Médina and Kasbah down the hill, modern Tangier up the hill, the beach also within striking distance.

The stairs … but hey, the city is built on the side of a mountain, so the only way is UP!
