Loved staying in a traditional wooden machiya. It had so much character. Also really appreciated being in a strictly non-smoking place. It was a really quiet place to sleep and yet so close to busy Gion and shopping streets. It was great to have a kitchen and washing machine. Loved the warm toilet seat!

Pillows were too hard. Although there was a lovely deep bath the plug didn’t hold the water. My husband is 6’ 1” so had to duck his head through all the doorways but we loved the quaintness of it all.

Great area of town. Close to trains, restaurants...Glad to have clothes washer.

We were a family of five and found the place very small and dark. One main small room with a table and saggy, aged sofa. The upstairs common sleeping area had a bed and three futons which overlapped when rolled out. The bathroom had no place to set anything and there was no lock on toilet area. If you are over 5'6" you will hit your head on things (We have stayed all over Japan and are used to smaller spaces, but this was extreme). The closet in the main room was full of owners random things and the lighting poor everywhere. I was surprised that the booking was non-refundable, and it was not a cheap price, but since the website looked professional, we took a chance. We only stayed one night of the 5 we had booked.

Bath so deep unsafe to enter ! Mirror useless, too small, lighting in bathroom insufficient ! Wifi didn’t work when we arrived ! Agent did come but had to hang around to meet them . Kitchen old tired facilities also gas wasn’t on, no instructions to turn it on. Washing machine misleading ( one in picture had dryer, no dryer provided! One towel per person for 7 days insufficient!

There wasn't anything big that was a problem, but there were a lot of small problems. The light at the entry alcove was too dim, and it flickered. The first step into the house didn't go all the way across the entry. The mirror in the bath was wavy. The uncovered light bulb next to it created a harsh light, making it hard to see your reflection. There were no hooks in the bath to hang up clothes or towels. Some light switches in the house didn't work. The 2 bedrooms upstairs weren't separated by a wall, and there was only one door. The light switch for one of the bedrooms was across the room, so you had to walk in the dark to get to it. The heater upstairs didn't work well, so the bedrooms were very cold at night. In short, the place could be made a lot more comfortable with a lot of small fixes.
