Yufuin Matsuri-an Nagomiya

Location is very near to Yufuin - walkable to Kirin Lake and the shops around. Place is very spacious. Private hot spring is fantastic.

A bit challenging to drive in as the roads are very narrow.

It was spacious, clean, complete and close to the lake.

I understand that the owner is responsible for maintaining the property and facilities, including providing usable items like umbrellas that are durable to withstand the weather in the area. As guests, we followed all the rules, which were plastered around the house and left the property in pristine condition- except that we broke one of the provided umbrellas due to the strong winds at the time of our stay. And this was one of those disposable, transparent umbrellas you can buy around Japan. We admitted to the owner that the umbrella broke due to strong winds and he charged us for it. I mean, it was minimal charge but a hotel or airbnb should not charge for things like disposable umbrellas that guests are not directly responsible for breaking.

The place is HUGE. Full 2 story house, complete with large Japanese style living room, 2 toilets, bathroom, large bedroom with 2 double beds and a tatami area, and private outdoor onsen. We visited mid-December when it was really cold, and you will feel it in the corridors and stairway which are not heated. The living room and bedroom are heated and do not have this issue. Incredibly clean and spacious, the highlight of this property is definitely the private onsen. While quite small, only 2 people at a time before it becomes cramped, it's everything you would expect from natural hot springs beside a volcano! While you may be worried by the many warning signs dotted around the house, the owner is very responsive and we had no issues at all.

We arrived by car after dark and it was quite difficult to find. The house is located in a very traditional area, away from the main street, and there are few street lights, plus the roads were super narrow! Unconfident drivers beware! There are few restaurants nearby, and they all close very early. Plan dinner early or you may need to survive off of the nearest Lawson convenience store.

Do not come here if you are driving a 7 seater car…. The roads are extremely narrow… we followed google map down a street and we couldn’t go any further… we had to back up and scratched our rental car 😭
