Woodside - Akaroa Holiday Cottage

This unit was lovely. Decorated nicely. Beautiful views from the deck. Very comfortable and private. A quick drive gets you into town.

The only sign on the highway said holiday cottages and we didn't know that was what we were looking for. Once we drove in we were still uncertain as to how to find OUR cottage. Obviously we figured it out but a small map such as the one on the brochure in the room may have helped. Also, we were concerned about running into another car on the long driveway both coming and going. We never did though so we didn't have to figure out what to do!

Location

While we appreciated the property's location and the prompt effort to restore hot water, our stay was significantly disrupted because of: 1. Security * A repair patch to the Califont meant that the electrician ran an extension cord through the glass front door, meaning we were unable to close or lock the door losing a safety risk for the night. * Subsequently, the cord was routed through the bathroom window, which we couldn’t fully close or secure—this left the bathroom exposed to the cold (Being freezing in NZ winter) and potential for intrusion. * We were told by the owner (after the fact by correspondence through Bachcare when we raised these concerns) that there was adequate heating otherwise. Unsure how we were supposed to heat the bathroom when the window was unable to be closed - unfortunately, it reduced our ability to use the bathroom amenities. 2. Lack of Communication * The electrician told us that he would return the following day to pick up the extension lead (did not return) and there was no further communication that other contractors may or may not attend the property to fix the repair patch, making it impossible to relax or feel at ease during our stay. 3. Misleading Claims * We were told via Bachcare on 12/8/25 (our stay was 1-3/8/25) that the owner had delivered a bottle of wine during our stay as a gesture of “goodwill”. * Unfortunately, we never received a bottle of wine, nor did we see the property manager again after the first afternoon. The property owner has continued to be adamant that we received a bottle of wine - if it was dropped off by someone and left in a location, it was never communicated to us further highlighting a lack of communication during our stay. 4. Chronic Maintenance Issues * We were informed this was the third instance of hot water issues at the property, with no prior diagnostics or repairs done before our booking—this should have been addressed ahead of our arrival.

Beautiful hillside garden setting, harbour views and private. Great wood fire, decor, spa and facilities. Great place to relax.
