Higher Mapstone - A true retreat nestled in a private sanctuary on Dartmoor

The property is very good. Space beds very comfortable. All high end equipment throughout the house which is unusual for a rental house.

On the lower ground bedroom there is no blind on the door which is odd, also the radiators didn’t work in the 2 downstairs bathrooms. Also Dishwasher didn’t work, it had a fault code which when reported I was told to turn it off dry the sensor with a hairdryer!! That didn’t work and nothing was done about it.

The location was amazing and the space in both the house and grounds were super.

The downstairs bedroom has a glass door so there was no privacy. The downstairs ‘family’ bathroom had opaque glass, which wasn’t ideal. Two bedrooms had baths but no showers

Property location was beautiful, views over land and valley are great to wake up to. Loads to enjoy in the house and keep all ages entertained, the house felt like a home so you could feel comfortable. Decoration was lovely and house was warm throughout our stay. Guides to using the equipment were thorough and other info in the guide was a nice touch too.

There was a hidden premium for my stay, which was not clear when booking. This amounted to approx £500 compared to booking days after leaving. I would have preferred to have been made aware of this uplift in price. There were a few slight niggles of cobwebs, spiders and odd bits of tlc required to the decor which could be addressed; especially for the additional fee I paid, a little bit more care and attention could have been paid.

The house was beautiful and the grounds were lovely. The wood burner was a real highlight.

The property wasn’t very clean when we arrived. There were lots of cobwebs, dust and dead bugs. The hob stopped working mid stay. The kitchen was well equipped for some things but not others. E.g no baking dishes. The can opener was broken. Salt but no pepper. Only one cloth and one tea towel were provided in the kitchen. The location is pretty secluded so it wasn’t easy to just ‘pop into town’ to get stuff we needed. A clearer description of what we could expect upon arrival would have been helpful. We absolutely loved our stay but it definitely could have been less frustrating.

Decor and location were brilliant

Cleanliness and lack of a welcome pack commensurate with the price point (think travel lodge and your’e closer to the reality in Higher Mapstone). Don’t tell me to complain at the time when there isn’t anyone onsite and we’ve arrived at a dirty unprepared house

The property was lovely. Roomy and spacious.

The downstairs bathroom would benefit from a full screen so the water does not escape everywhere. The extractor fan is missing. Additional netting on the door for privacy. Door lock not very functional. Awkward to open and shut the window due to shutters. Toiletries would have been useful. Two of the bathrooms did not have overhead showers. The induction cooker was not straightforward so only used the gas rings. Some people found the beds soft. The access to the property was extremely narrow and hedges were overgrown and scratching the cars. Hardly a passing place.

Higher Mapstone is absolutely idyllic - both as a house but with it’s perfectly tranquil position! We all loved the peace, the comfort, the views, and the beautiful decor - and books! Walking from there, sitting in the terrace of an evening and being there together as a family was just wonderful. We all loved it and wanted to stay longer!

As I’ve written there was absolutely nothing to dislike about the property but we all felt that it was ridiculous not having a set of champagne glasses given this place is the perfect place to be to celebrate - drinking champagne from mismatched wine glasses just isn’t ok! And yes - for a property like this - surely not having a proper set of matching wine glasses is just not acceptable… Also, in addition to the coffee machine, to just have a big cafetière which we certainly as a family like to have at breakfast. I think one of the beautiful wooden outdoor benches needs to be fixed as the back was definitely wobbly … It seems given the incredibly high standard of everything else, a bit odd that these things weren’t provided - especially the glasses. As other people have said, there need to be instructions for the cooker!!! Everything else was perfect!

Location outstanding, views incredible, house has a great peaceful energy.
