Hatale Tea Estate Bungalow

In spite of rain and low cloud still enjoyed occasional glimpses of surrounding hills listening to the birds and a dip in the lovely pool. The fresh air was a welcome relief after the heat on the coast and we slept really well without AC. Interior of bungalow was like living in a set from a historical tv production. Meals cooked by the chef were tasty and met our requests to try Sri Lankan spicy curries. Gardener did a great job maintaining the lovely garden and gorgeous plants and flowers. He also took the time to show us up to have a look around the adjoining tea factory.

Although the antique sanitary ware in the bathroom was lovely, the bath and shower needed a bit of upgrading but we understood that was soon due to take place.

The property is full of charm, isolated with an impeccable view on the valley and mountains. The staff are the kindest and most helpful people, they prepared some delicious food for us as well I couldn’t recommend more

The staff were amazing, the manager was really lovely and helpful and especially the chef was amazing, he went out of the way that everything was perfect for us and the food was great. The gardener is doing an amazing job and helped us finding the path for our hike. The position and view from the property is probably what made us come here in the first place, absolutely stunning and a nice 2.5 hours walk from it to the mini worlds end.

The house has so much potential but it feels like the owner just collects the money coming in and not spending a cent on any upgrades. It’s in dire need of a renovation. We knew we are booking a heritage place and expected some of it. But the furniture, especially couches in the common area but also in the room really didn’t invite one to sit down. Also chairs around the pool felt like they are about to fall apart. We’re very used to different type of accommodation and also stayed in many budget hotels which were way better value. If this room would sell for USD 40 we’d say it’s fair, but at USD 100 we expect more.

Beautiful property, in the middle of nature and the tea plantation. The room was super large, with ceiling fan and mosquito net. Terence and the rest of the staff were really the highlight of our stay. They took such good care of us and treated us with such kindness, bringing us tea and fresh juices throughout the day. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner there for two days (always different), and this was really the best food we had in Sri Lanka. We could also fill up our water bottles at all time, which was very appreciated. Magnificent furniture, all from the colonial times, though it could be a bit cleaner (cushions and fabrics of the different sofas). The swimming pool was the perfect addition, after walking around in the hot weather. Finally, our visit to the tea factory was very interesting: we learnt a lot and were so happy to be able to buy their tea at the end, for a very decent price.

Bathroom needs a refreshment, especially the bathtub and the shower curtain. It would also be nice to add an umbrella next to the pool, as there is no shade during the day and the sun can be quite brutal.

Everything! We have stayed at this bungalow and the sister property at Mini Worlds End several times and have always thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The bungalow has a wonderful setting amongst the tea plantation with a fabulous view directly to the Knuckles Range. There is a very clean swimming pool in the garden with the same fabulous view. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and filled with period furniture. The large attached bathroom, although old fashioned, functions perfectly well. The food served is delicious and the staff extremely welcoming and helpful. Unfortunately I was ill on this particular visit and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and supportive, even visiting me in hospital. By the way the illness was nothing to do with the place or the food!! We will definitely return another year and would highly recommend the bungalow to anyone seeking a true heritage property experience with peace and tranquility and plenty of opportunities for walking.

Beautifully peaceful location overlooking Knuckles. Best views in Sri Lanka. Whole bungalow to ourselves. Immaculate garden. Very helpful staff, including tour of the Tea Factory. Heaven on earth. Huge room with private sitting area.

This place is just beautiful and full of peace - you will stay between tee fields in an old, charming British styled bungalow. We enjoyed the tour to the tea factory so much and can definitely recommend the breakfast and dinner - the cooking team is amazing!
