Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa

the food is excellent, the gardens are well kept and the peacocks roaming around are different

the doors to most of the rooms could do with a paint, but its a 800 year old castle and doesnt bother me, but some people could call it tired, but i thought it enhanced the stay.

Location and staff and the breakfast

Deluxe double room was very dated and in need of redecoration. Apart from the bathroom. The room was very dark and dated with a lack of a plug socket near to a mirror when using the hairdryer and not really anywhere bright enough to do makeup. In general the property does need updating and I felt the price for the room was high for the standard of the room.

The room was lovely, large, comfortable. The hotel is a fascinating building in large superbly kept gardens. The staff were all helpful and friendly. The peacocks made for an interesting dimension to the stay. We used the restaurant for evening meals and breakfast, very satisfied with both

Unusual to have such a nice stay, nothing to criticise

What a fantastic hotel, such an interesting place to stay, warm & comfortable. Breakfast buffet style with lots of choice, hot & cold foods. The bacon was really well cooked, and good quality sausages. I loved the summer fruit mix with a good ladle of yoghurt, a real treat. It is in the centre of Ruthin which is a lovely place Itself. Lying on the comfy bed with white bedding, watching the sunset & listening to the birds, no traffic noise, no planes flying over was such a delight for someone who usually lives in a noisy area! All staff are so friendly & helpful. Walking outside to explore the castle ruins & photograph the peacocks is a unique experience. A short walk down to the spa area to add a special treat to a lovely hotel.

Possible could have done with extra pillows.

It’s location, quirkiness & the Peacocks

We booked breakfast for 9.30am and had to ask for food to be brought out as there were no hash browns, mushrooms etc, given breakfast doesn’t finish until 10am we thought this was poor

Love the location and the history of the building

Rooms needed dusting above eye level, coving and curtain pelmets where very dusty with cobwebs Paint flaking off in parts No tv remote and unable to turn on or change channel without remote

The hotel is in a lovely location above Ruthin. Liked its look from the outside. The suite was comfortable but tired in its decor although it was trying to emulate the feel of the person it’s named after. The bathroom was huge but needed more in the way of toiletries. It is very dog friendly and although understandable, dogs are not allowed in the dining room but are allowed in the nearby bar

Although impressive on its appearance the hotel is very tired in its decor and furniture. Paintwork is scuffed and peeling and floor coverings worn. It’s the nature of the building that doesn’t allow for a lift and it’s a bit rambling in its layout. We attempted to sit outside but the furniture was not maintained and covered in Peacocks droppings. Although there are nice lawns to the front the external areas around the hotel are neglected with broken doors, rubbish, traffic cones and disused furniture stacked all around. If it’s a wedding venue the photographer will have to be imaginative. A tepee, for external parties I should think, is torn and covered in lichen and very unwelcoming.

The setting of the hotel.

Very poor lighting,the corridors were poorly lit and so we’re the stairs. In fact I tripped over the top step on the stairs while opening the door but the top step was hardly visible because of poor lighting. I did injure my arm. The lighting in the bedroom was fine while the main lights were on but the bedside lights did not provide enough light to read by or go to the toilet at night. To read you had to leave the main light on but when you had finished you had to get out of bed to switch the light off at the other end of the room! In the restaurant the window sills were filthy, wall paper peeling off the walls and big holes in the plaster. The hangings needed rejuvenating (they looked very sad). A dirty toilet,floor and plug hole.

The location was good, the staff were friendly and helpful.

The place is a ruin and needs a fortune spent on it. Our room was at least 100 yards from the restaurant. Breakfast was acceptable but dinner was poor and we did not receive a numbers of items which were on the menu. All the food was overpriced considering the poor quality. The lighting in the restaurant was so poor that the only way to read the menu was by use of the torch on my wife's mobile phone!
