Grotta del Monaco

Ideal spot for a cycling vacation - either solo or with a group of friends. There are 3 rooms on the first floor and a shared kitchen in case you need to prepare some post-ride snacks + there's a family-owned restaurant on the ground floor. Big secured parking area (probably good for 10+ cars), great location on the footsteps of all the epic climbs to Etna. I wasn't even using the aircon, since on that elevation it was very comfortable to sleep without aircon, just with the windows opened (priceless, given those crazy 35-40C temperatures on the coastline). Host is very welcoming - even though I don't speak Italian, we figure out how to communicate + when I asked to wash my roadbike to dust it off from the Etna's ashes - no problems at all. Breakfasts are fine. Small towns Pedara and Nicolosi are absolute jewels to experience in the evening.

The place is 17 km away from Refugio Sapienza, the entrance to Etna Sud. The house hosts 3 rooms to rent, mine had a double bed and a single bed, had simple furniture, good working AC/ heater and TV. Bed and pillow comfortable, plenty of towels , all super clean. Bathroom is shared, huge, super clean, good warm shower. There is a shared kitchen with a balcony that looks straight to the Etna. One can cook, and do teas/coffee. For the super convenient price (a bargain for the Etna area), the super friendly owner included a breakfast with a delicious cornetto filled with apricot jam (warm). Parking in a huge private slot next door. Highly recommended.

The location is very close to Mt Etna, which makes it very easy in the morning to hike early. Breakfast was prepared for us early since we left early to go hiking - including homemade fruit pie!

The owner was very grumpy that we arrived late at 9pm and was not accommodating when we needed a larger room even though there clearly was not many people staying at the hotel.

The breakfast is wonderful! The house is very cozy and extremely clean! Sensational reception by Mr Carmello! Very happy! I really enjoyed it and recommend it!
