Not the property but the host a bit rude

The couple running the B&B were accommodating and the room was spectacular. The bathroom had a large soaking tub and a large shower with good water pressure. In addition both the room and bathroom were well decorated.

The house is clean and well-decorated, the room and en suite bathroom are spacious and the bed is extremely comfortable. The house is just outside Carrick and very near the Slieve League and other sights of interest.

There are three primary drawbacks to this property. First, contrary to the hosts' assertions, the property is not easy to find and directions are not explicit. Second, although the per night price is reasonable for a popular destination in high season, the added charge of 17.50 Euro for breakfast is not. For a comparable price, other booking.com properties include a generous breakfast. Third and in my estimation a deal breaker, the hosts insist on a 4 to 6pm checkin. It is impossible to eat dinner and get to the remote location prior to 6pm. Eating after checkin is equally problematic because the few restaurants in Carrick are fully booked after 6pm. The hosts reside in the house, so there is no obvious reason why they should inconvenience their guests in this way. I would neither stay here again nor recommend it to others.

Beware. Stay elsewhere. Rigid and rude attitude. Do yourself a favour, read the reviews. A tread through enough of them provides a picture of a very rude individual, with a rigid set of rules which are adhered to dogmatically and quoted as “reasonable” means for him to take people’s money without providing the service booked. Even a good review with a little helpful pointer, receives a snide reply. Most properties in this area have a check-in of 3-10pm with a very small number giving 3-7pm. We’ve never encountered a property that does not have a reasonable level of understanding for unforeseen circumstances. This host sets a 2-hour check-in period and holds rigidly to it. Reviews show that if you don’t make it in that period, he cancels your booking, logging you as a no-show and keeps your money. In our case he went one step further. We had an unforeseen problem on the day of travel and knew we were not going to make it between 4-6pm. Two people tried to contact the property from 10am that morning, using different phones. We initially thought we had a wrong number as we could not get through. When we eventually managed to contact him, it was almost 4pm. We were going to be about 1 hour outside the check-in time. His reaction was pure rudeness, accusing us of not trying to make contact as he was in the house all day. We said call logs would show that numerous calls had been made all day from two phones to the right number. He then stated he was cancelling the booking with booking.com and we just assumed we’d be refunded. However, he held on until after 6pm and rather than cancelling the booking he put it in as a no-show thereby holding onto the money. From other reviews this appears to be a common practise on his behalf. We have stayed all over Ireland and have never encountered this sharp practise. We managed to find a place in the same area and our experience could not have been more different with true Donegal hospitality from hosts suited to their profession.

Location wise was fantastic, so close to sliabh liag. The owner was extremely helpful and friendly and the room was perfect, beautiful decor. Highly recommend

I had a horrific experience. I have stayed in a lot of b&bs in Ireland so far and this is the worst. Host never allows any requests with respect to check-in times (4-6pm) that's ridiculous specially during summer..and he cancelled our stay...beware.. I had requested for a late check-in (around 9pm) And this request was made one day before the stay. But they replied saying your host is in UK and he will reply later..and on the day of stay around 4pm they replied saying they can't accept late check-ins.. as we were travelling the whole day, we didn't see this message due to limited connectivity.. when I tried contacting them around 6.15pm they said they cancelled my booking and didn't even refund the money..and he was so rude that despite my explanation and requests he ignored and said he can't help. The host has an excuse of mobile connectivity and internet limitations around his property but never understands that people who come to stay may also experience the same during their travel..and he expected that I had to reply him within that time span(4-6pm) while he took one day to reply me about his strict check-in check-out times. He could have replied to me on the day when I requested the late check-in, saying they can't do it..( instead of saying they are in UK and reply later). I could have found and alternative. The house might be great, food might be exceptional, and the hospitality might be wonderful during the stay, but if the host is so rude and cannot understand and responds to travellers issues, and leave them in the middle of nowhere..it's of no use...my holiday was ruined.

We really enjoyed the location and the decor of the room and the house is wonderful.

1) the owner did not offer any useful information about where to go or where to eat rather chastised us for not having pre-booked everything in advance (we had no issues finding places despite it being summer/weekend/August and bank holiday which he insisted would make it IMPOSSIBLE for us). Very poor attitude. 2) He insisted on calling a person we had already made arrangements with for getting a fishing permit, complicating issues. It is one thing to ask if we want assistance and another to impose. He then insisted on escorting us (we had our own car) to the meeting spot but then left us half way when we arrived at the village which kind of gave us the impression he only wanted a ride as it is a 45 min walk to the village. 3) Very importantly he did not give us keys to our room OR the property. This is really problematic if you wish to go out early in the morning (e.g. fishing or whatever) but also a safety issue. In an area with absolutely ZERO mobile signal, what happens in the middle of the night if there is an emergency? What happens if the owner falls ill and we are left locked in? And he stated that he would lock the door at 11.00 but when we were back earlier he consistently locked up earlier, meaning one evening I could not pick up my medication which I forgot in the car. His justification is that too many people leave taking keys with them. 4) Hot water availability depends on the owner's discretion. If you come back in the evening after being out in the rain for a day, don't expect hot water every day. Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn't. Eco-friendliness was the excuse. 5) the owner lied about the number of cats he has (?) 6) the room was not clean. There were coffee marks all over the surfaces, dust, fluff, pills on the carpet from previous visitors, a very yucky looking market on the bed cover and other people's hair (yuck) in the bathtub.

Convenient to Sliabh Liag Cliffs. Very spacious room and en-suite, delicious breakfast and John was a welcoming, very interesting host!
