"Fulfilled our needs for a 1 night stay"

7.0

The bed was very comfortable. The host was very friendly and welcoming. The continental breakfast was good.

The shower was virtually unusable as it is in a slanted roof no higher than about 5ft drooping to floor level. You’d need to sit in the bath to shower. It isn’t somewhere for a longer stay but for 1 night it was fine.

Convenient location for our wedding destination

Any decent hotel or guest house should be able to nail a few basics. A comfy bed, a decent shower, a good breakfast and making guests feel welcome. The Old Rectory didn’t achieve any of these things. On my arrival, there was no proper place to park due to various vehicles being scattered around the driveway. Before I got out of the car, I was challenged by who I assumed to be the owner, as to why I was there. When I said I had a reservation, I was told a curt “No - we don’t have any reservations today”. When I told her my name, I was told “That was yesterday”. When I showed my Booking.com reservation, she realized that they had noted it down on the wrong day of the calendar - an inauspicious start. Luckily I was just dropping our bags before going to an event so they had time to make up the room before our return. The bed, while technically a double, was so small that it wasn’t possible for two normal size people to sleep without touching or move without waking the other person up. As a result I had a terrible night’s sleep being woken up early the next morning by the clanking heating system which created a lot more noise than heat. The bathroom ceiling was so low that it was impossible to stand up to take a shower. I had to kneel in the bathtub to wash myself. Breakfast was self-service sitting at a long table in the kitchen (which we would have been sharing with other guests had there been any) with no proper coffee (only instant) and no cooked breakfast. Only cereal and toast was offered. When it came to checking out, it was not possible to pay by credit card. The owner wanted us to do a bank transfer!! Luckily I was able to do this on my phone, but for some, I can imagine this would be quite an inconvenience. Overall, the impression was of an establishment run for the convenience of the owners with little regard for the comfort or convenience of customers. Our stay here was frankly miserable and I would strongly caution you to avoid this establishment.

The property is set in a quiet rural location. Bedroom was set in the eaves and spacious. The room was clean and bedlinen was soft and comfortable pillows. Key to front door provided so was able to come and go.

Bathroom was basic and the shower passable due to the position of the shower head making it really inadequate for anyone taller then four foot. Mattress was hard and uncomfortable. No tea/coffee making facilities provided in the room. Breakfast was semi self service in the kitchen and consisted of basic cold breakfast items. No evidence of smoke alarms in the property. On balance over priced for quality of room and provisions

"Nice, but not what we expected"

5.0

It was a lovely old house with beams throughout, beautiful surroundings and very quiet

It was cold and heating wasn't on, warmer outside then in. Advertised as breakfast included but it was some old fruit, questionable yogurt and cereal

"Quirky B&B in pleasant surroundings"

6.0

A lot of cobwebs, but otherwise a very clean, tidy and comfortable room. The surroundings were beautiful, and the interior was very rustic. The experience was very endearing with a few novel quirks.

Check-in is dependent on a member of the family being available, which is not guaranteed. Low ceiling shower and no hot water from the basin were unexpected. We were surprised that it was self-serve breakfast, but no guidance around this. There were no locks on the doors as this is a listed building, and the sound travels from neighbouring rooms.

"Sadly left with a sense of disappointment in what was otherwise a great visit to the area."

6.0

The owner was pleasant and allowed us to check in early. We thoroughly enjoyed the pub down the road.

Whilst "old and quirky" as others have said, this, for us, tipped over to impractical. I am 5'10" and spent most of the visit bent over to avoid banging my head. When I informed the owner that I had cut my head open on the very low artex ceiling in Room 4, and there was some blood on the pillowcase where my head bled during the night, her response was, don't worry about the pillowcase. There was no first aid kit evident despite our search of the kitchen. Our room did not have a lock on the door, not all the rooms have and the front door was often left unlocked by other guests leaving no security at all. There was a shower attached to the wall in the bathroom, but the ceiling was way too low for anyone other than a child to stand up. There was no dining table or area in our room as per the room description.
