"A great stay close to nature"

8.0

The breakfast was a good continental, but we especially liked the big panoramic window looking out over the trees. The house with three rooms for guests was great. The surroundings were breathtaking and we liked being close to the surreal gardens of Edward James, a 10-minute walk. We have never heard so many birds singing.

The mattresses were old and we good feel each spring. The shower water in the upstairs rooms was a trickle, but one floor lower there was another shower available with adequate water.

"Had a great time in Xilitla"

8.0

Casa Camino a las Pozas is beautifully located near the Edward James Gardens, with lush vegetation, bird and insect sounds and many butterflies. Vivian is a very nice person, we enjoyed talking to her a lot, getting to know her a bit over time. She showed us some original statues by Leonora Carrington which one of her relatives happens to store! Xilitla has charm, especially around the Plaza Central with the former Augustine Convent. Lots of eating places, from great (La Comtessa... extremely inexpensive and delish "deals of the day" - always the same) to overpriced, trying-to-be-hip places with terrible food (Querreque, avoid at all costs). If you have time, sitting at the far end of Cafeto and having a coffee or lemonade while looking over the steep hills can be a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Definitely worth checking out are the Edward James Gardens, and the Sotano de las Huahuas. Lots of other places too.

There were a few small imperfections. Donaldo, the HUGE dog, is friendly, but if you don't like dogs he can be a bit intimidating. Once I came back with some pizza and he decided he wanted some and did not let me pass until some owner intervention. Also, this being selva and all, there's naturally a few critters around, like some ants in the room that can be ignored. For me, the biggest problem was that we were forbidden access to the kitchen. This is fine if you are there just a couple of days and tend to go out eating two or three times a day, but we stayed a week, and having a plate and a spoon (maybe even a chair and table?) would have been nice. A way to warm up something, make some tea, or put something in the fridge would have helped too. The continental breakfast was just that. Every day exactly the same. Again, fine for shorter periods, but difficult to enjoy after a few days. There is one restaurant in walking distance (Posada James), stunning view from the terrace , the food is great, and the waitresses are attentive. For more variety, one can walk into town (30-40 min to the Plaza Central), or drive there which is a bit of an adventure navigating the very narrow one-way streets that are used freely in both directions.

"A great place to stay in Xilitla."

8.0

Great location, quiet and lush surroundings. Close enough to walk to the Edward James Sculpture Gardens. Continental breakfast of fruit, toast, and coffee/tea. Short drive to town. We had no problem with the Great Dane as he (Donaldo) was friendly as soon as we met him. Shower was hot with good pressure. We were able to park our car right outside our room. Beds were comfortable and room was nice and cool even during the hottest part of the day.

Could have a bit more counter space in the bathroom.

"Nice place in Xilitla. The owner is very accommodating and helpful."

Amazing bed, very clean. Vivian was very nice and helpful.

There was a nice garden but, when raining, there was no ramp to access the house so it got slippery and muddy.

When I rode up to the property the owners very large dog greeted me and immediately clamped down on my arm nearly pulling me off my motorcycle. Luckily he didn’t bite through my riding jacket but did leave a bruise on my forearm. It is insane that a host would allow a dog that large and untrained to run free when guest are expected. When arriving I would recommend staying in your vehicle until you are guaranteed her dog is restrained!
