Very cool owners, great staff and attitude. A house full of history. Very authentic. In the heart of the island with great food.

No A/C so its a bit hard to sleep when you are used to it :) There is some nice breeze though. But I understand the concept, A/C will ruin that atmosphere.

"Relaxing. Very very relaxing."

10.0

Mostly, I was totally relaxed and the longer O stayed, the more relaxed I became. It is very well maintained and beautifully renovated hotel in the middle of the old town of Luma. Great effort has been made to reduce its environmental footprint and it is very eco friendly.

Nothing.

"It is completely unacceptable for a host to be so blatantly disrespectful and deceitful to a guest."

5.0

The property itself is incredibly beautiful to behold. It is breathtaking, really. The location is very central, making it easy for guests to explore the island. The food is delicious and very authentic. The kitchen staff and grounds keepers are all very lovely and friendly

Solo female travelers and black skinned African women should avoid this beautiful house AT ALL COSTS, because you will be be disrespected and insulted by the so called “host”, named Mohamed. Every other individual at this house was nothing but gracious and kind, but this poor excuse of a “host” was so bad that it overshadowed the amazing workers at the house. This “host” is the one and only person in all of my travels in Kenya and around the world who has been Rude to me. My reservation was via booking.com (same as all 5 bookings throughout Kenya for this trip). I’d received a message that transfer to the house would be arranged, but on the arrival day he ignored all my messages requesting confirmation of my transfer arrangements, so no one was there to pick me up at the jetty when I got off the bus from Malindi. If you are familiar with that scene, it is scary for any solo woman, especially a foreigner/non local. Thankfully i made friends with a police chief during the bus ride. She saw that this “host” was being non-responsive so she missed her stop to ride with me to the jetty just to ensure l safely boarded a boat to arrive on lamu island, she checked on me everyday. I finally got a hold of him and his response was that they waited and I wasn’t there but he’ll be right there to get me. What?!! When he arrives to get me, he offered no explanation for not responding to any of my messages or leaving me hanging. We get to Subira and he asks what I have planned/ what he can arrange for me. I said wanted to shower and head over to lamu museum then I’d dine on-site that night as They advertise group dinners. We also discussed a walking tour in for the following morning - he said he’d set it up but he didn’t tell me what time it starts. I was so exhausted after that shower that I took a slept till it was time to get ready for dinner. I was shocked to find a table set for two. Very intimate.

"NEEDS SORTING OUT Mr Aars !"

3.0

Interesting house and my top floor room gets the breeze.

The manager's hosting skills are negligable. Room 6 is noisy. 2 deck chairs frames without fabric! Room never cleaned. Dirty mosquito net with cigarette burn holes. No hot water. Ordering food was a FARCE. Poor breakfast.

"Fantastic eco-hotel in historical town"

10.0

Beautiful eco-certified hotel in Lamu Town. Whilst the town itself is not everyone’s cup of tea, recommend you visiting it or even spend the entire time here saving you lots of money whilst commuting to Shela and Manda Bay. The hotel itself is picturesque and well maintained with a delicious breakfast and slow food dinner offering. Everything from the towels to the soap and water is sustainably sourced. The couple that runs the hotel is humble and passionate, full of life stories. Be mindful of the sustainable latrine toilets but if you’ll ever try them, it’s here. Indulge in a yoga class and enjoy the beautiful sky at night.

"Come here if you want a real local experience."

10.0

Gorgeous house with amazing swahili flair, lovely hosts. Seems like they contribute to the Lamu community in a big way, they are well known and loved with everyone I spoke to. Hotel staff will help you organize any outing you‘d like, I can recommend Dhow trips, but they also help with other activities (plus reasonable pricing recommendations). Eco friendly facilities and the breakfast is amazing with ingredients sourced almost exclusively from their own Lamu farm.

Nothing.
