Bawdsey Hall

Lovely, peaceful 2 night stay at quirky, characterful B&B. David was very friendly and interesting. The big room and private bathroom were clean. Even though bathroom was across corridor, it was no problem - providing dressing gowns was a good thought though. The bed was really comfortable and the quality bedding and towels were lovely. We really enjoyed sitting at the dining table, in the room, eating our lovely breakfast, brought by David at our chosen time. Great start to the day! Try getting the ferry from Bawdsey Quay to Felixstowe Ferry, having a walk, then lovely lunch at The Ferry Boat Inn, before getting ferry back:) Would recommend Bawdsey Hall, especially if you are in to wildlife.

The webcam of wildlife - the only plus point was seeing 1 deer and 1 badger but lots of rats.

No access to the garden. It says in the list of facilities this was available: Guests can also relax in the garden. But access was only for those who paid extra for the wildlife photography. We saw the wildlife on the garden's webcam and saw lots of rats! The hosts had visiting family with kids racing round the garden when we arrived, disturbing the peace! It was almost impossible to get hold of the 'hosts' to rectify problems. They did not return our texts or website messages. We returned used glasses as instructed, but they were not replenished the next day so we had to drink our wine from plastic tooth mugs from the bathroom! The private bathroom turned out to be across a public corridor which was not great. We saw & reported bugs in the bathroom but there was no response from the host. The breakfast was delivered outside the room on a trolley. This was not mentioned in the description. It was a basic choice and was not hot enough. These measures were OK for COVID but it seems they continue to suit the hosts to run the property in this minimal approach with as little contact or effort with guests as possible. It would nice to meet the host each day and other guests. It wasn't good value for money. For the same price we could have got a hotel room with a proper ensuite with communal areas and a bar. This total seclusion and limitation to being in our own room didn't suit us, we would not go back.

The price

The wildlife on site is something else and there was a constant stream of different wildlife. Either viewed from our window or the wildlife camera streamed to our room. Lots of lovely walks in the area too.

Cooked breakfast was lovely but got cold quick.

No access to garden. Entrance to property. A junk yard. A filthy porch. A difficult door to open and close. Very unwelcoming on arrival. A small window to view wildlife. Rooms are not en-suite. We felt that we were merely an add-on and were not really welcome as guests at all. Just there to help pay the bills with the minimum of effort. No fire escape, or notices for emergency exit. Freedom of movement was extremely restricted.

Spacious, sumptuous rooms. Lovely outlook. Serene atmosphere. Lovely breakfast.

The cleaning was up to standard. The location was gorgeous, peace and quiet.

The fact it wasn’t on suite bathroom, the bathroom was opposite the room, plus no much chose for breakfast (2 option).
