Sound of the River

Great little B&B, absolutely spotless room and the DIY breakfast was fabulous.

A little noisy as it’s on the corner of a junction, but not too bad.

This place is an absolute little gem!! We were only staying one night and Sound of the River was perfect. Dai/David, the owner, was very friendly and helpful but not at all intrusive. There were plenty of facilities in the B&B, including tea, coffee, milk, bread, cold meats, Babybel cheese and other breakfast goods - not forgetting fresh fruit and chocolate!! We loved everything about this place and will definitely use it every time we visit Hay on Wye ☺ No complaints about anything there, even the sound of the traffic didn't bother us. Only thing I would have liked is maybe a little flip up shelf on the wall next to the bed to hold things like a glass of water etc but not a major issue. Also, because I'm a clumsy person, I laid out a towel over the little step into the kitchen/bathroom area - which I do in other hotels, just to remind myself that there's a step ;) Sound of the River was perfect for someone like me who enjoys birdwatching as there were dozens of red kites soaring above us as we sat out on the patio. Amazing value for money and just a short walk up the road to the Bridge End Inn which does excellent food and has a warm welcome too.

We said we’d return and we did! Perfect location for exploring Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye. The property is immaculate and very comfortable. Great selection of breakfast foods. Good communication from hosts. Think this is going to be a regular place we return to when we visit Hay-on-Wye!

Self-contained accommodation with kitchenette, friendly host

Lovely hosts. Specifically provided Gluten Free biscuits, cereals, and bread for my wife who is Coeliac. Room has everything you need and is clean and nice and toasty. Only downside is it has its own gas boiler which does make some noise at night as it comes on and off.

Bed being against a wall makes it a bit tricky for two people, but not much can be done about that.

Comfy bed and plenty of fluffy towels. Owner very friendly, informative and went out of their way to make sure we had all we needed including DF foods for breakfast. Chocolates and welsh cakes too. Kitchenette, including fridge and microwave worked well so we could not only sort breakfast, from food provided by our hosts, but also store use food we had brought to make packed lunches before heading out for walks each day. Information on walks was also.provided by our hosts. Co-op a short walk away as were several places to eat too. Would happily stay here again if holidaying in the area. We were lucky with the weather for end of Oct but holiday accommodation was very snug - heating worked very quickly and was hardly needed as property seemed well insulated.

Could have done with somewhere to store muddy boots eg can buy rubber boot mats (left them in the car), a coat rack for wet jackets (rather than hanging them next to the clean white dressing gowns provided)woyld have been good and somewhere to place washing up before drying it as placing wet items directly onto the work surface meant water spread out rather making a bit of a mess. A larger door mat too would be a good investment as in effect one was stepping directly from outside into one's bedroom!! There was also road noise as accommodation was on a junction of roads but ear plug use meant sleep wasn't disturbed. These are minor things though. The accommodation was a lucky find for us.

A very cozy, comfy room with everything we needed for breakfast provided. Would definitely stay again.

Lovely little place , small but well thought out . Lovely lady greeted us . Nice area to walk around. Mentioned I was vegan and that was catered for 😊. Thank you
