"We would consider The Saxby for a short stay in Skegness again, but wouldn't stay for a week."

8.0

The property is in a good location, assuming that nobody in your party has mobility issues if you prefer to walk to the front rather than take the car and pay for parking. (I have a blue badge but anyway we preferred to take a taxi, which was about £5 - £5.50 from The Saxby to the pier and the same again for the return). It was good that there is on-site parking, even though not a space for every guest. We turned up a bit late on our 1st night so had to park on the street, but the next day there were spaces available and we were able to park at the side of the hotel. It is a busy road and lots of parked cars, so we felt happier when we were parked off-road. The very fact that the Saxby is set back slightly from the seafront and main entertainment zone meant that the noise levels were fine, especially as the weather was so warm that we needed to have our bedroom windows open. Anybody who was staying on the front would have needed ear plugs if they wanted to sleep, I would think!! The owners were lovely - unobtrusive but always available if needed, and super-friendly. I had my birthday while we were there, and we came back from an afternoon on the pier to find a Happy Birthday! banner across our bedroom door. So thoughtful! We didn't eat at The Saxby because no catering is provided during July and August, so we can't comment on food, but we had a kettle in our room, with plenty of tea and coffee provided and 2 packs of cookies, plus a mini fridge which was very welcome for our beer and wine!! There are USB points in the double sockets by the bed which was great, because I tend to listen to the radio on my phone during the night so I was able to keep it fully-charged. There is a Tesco literally a 2 minute drive away, which was fine for us to get a sandwich to have in our room as we didn't want to go out on our first evening, having had a longish drive.

We would have preferred a wider bed. We are used to a king size whereas this bed was a standard double, even though the room was marketed as a 'de luxe' option. A king-size could be accommodated by getting rid of the rather 'tired looking' bedside cabinets and getting slim-line ones and smaller lamps, or by fitting simple shelves directly to the wall at each bedside, because we only needed a small lamp and coaster on either side. The bed itself was comfortable enough, but I think quite old, judging by the noise the springs made when I got on it/in it! The weather was VERY hot and so was the room. A fan was provided, but it didn't create much of a breeze even on the maximum setting. Also, it was a pillar fan on the floor so what breeze it did make didn't travel very far. We put it on the side table to elevate it which helped a bit but not much unfortunately.
