The location, close to Duinrell, was excellent and the apartment itself was stylish and initially exceeded our expectations, which made the subsequent disappointment with the non-functioning air conditioning and the owner's lack of empathy even more frustrating.

We travelled to The Netherlands during an exceptional heatwave, with temperatures reaching around 31°C on the day of our arrival. A key reason for booking this accommodation was that we had specifically paid for a room advertised as having air conditioning. Upon arrival, it became immediately apparent that the air conditioning in our room was not working. No operating instructions were provided in the apartment, so I spent considerable time searching online to ensure I was using the controller correctly. When this failed, I contacted the owner, who said she would come to the apartment within 15 minutes. Shortly afterwards, I thought I had resolved the issue and called her back. However, it soon became clear that I had only managed to activate the fan function and that the air conditioning itself was not producing any cold air. As the apartment was on the top floor, it became unbearably hot and felt more like an oven than suitable holiday accommodation. I contacted the owner again and she attended the property. After attempting to resolve the problem and speaking with someone by phone, she confirmed that the air conditioning was not working. The heat inside the apartment was so extreme that she herself was visibly sweating heavily while standing in the room. I asked whether any alternative cooling could be provided, such as portable fans, but none were available. We paid for accommodation advertised as having air conditioning, yet this essential facility was unavailable during one of the hottest periods of the year. As a result, my wife, our four-year-old child, our nineteen-year-old, and I endured an extremely uncomfortable and largely sleepless night in intolerable conditions. The owner received full payment, but we did not receive the accommodation or facilities that were advertised. The lack of functioning air conditioning had a significant impact on our comfort, wellbeing, and enjoyment of our stay, and I believe this merits appropriate compensation.
